Just returned from the Oregon Coast. Fished out of Garibaldi. Limited on Sea Bass Monday, then went for Tuna on Wednesday. The boat brought in 59 Albacore. We each took home 6 and some for the crew. I brought home 80 lbs of Tuna.

Now that's cool. I always wanted to fish for those silver rockets!

Albacore and false tuna are on my bucket list.

[#502800]Did you go out with Siggi G charters in Garibaldi?[/#502800]

I love that coast. Got to do a charter of Depoe Bay a few years ago.

We were with Siggi Charters on Monday for bottom fish. Wednesday we chartered through Garibaldi Charters on the boat the Norwester, for Tuna. I have chartered with Garibaldi Charters before. Captain Joe on the Siggi-G was great, but the Norwester is a much more comfortable boat for Tuna as you go 20 to 50 miles off shore. I have fished with both Captain Mick and Captain Lance from Garibaldi Charters. Both are great Captains and can put you on fish.

They really are rockets. On the trolling poles you can generally have the fish ready for the deck with 3 line-stripping runs. On the light tackle, used when you stop and cast or bait fish, it is much more challenging. I personally caught 7, two on the trolling poles and 5 on the light tackle. It was a real battle. My daughter caught 8, 4 on trolling and 4 on light tackle. She is still sore, but stoked that she outfished me. I did have one more on the light tackle that broke me off at the boat after 5 or 6 runs. I think he had me worn out rather than the other way around.

Here are some photos that I just downloaded. The first is two of my daughters, son-in-law and myself after bottom fishing on the Siggi-G. Next is working the crab pots again on the Siggi-G. Next is Toni bendo on Tuna. Photo op with Tuna. Buckets of Tuna (3 of these 20 fish in each, were offloaded to the dock with a crane.

Those fish are so slick! Looks like they're made of metal. Are they as solid and strong as they look? Love that "scicle" tail.
I really need to branch out a bit.

They are powerful and all muscle. They have a little groove along the side so that side fin can lay right flush with the body. The skin is thick and tough like leather. These are my first experience with Tuna. Two previous charters in previous years were canceled for weather. It was great to finally get out on them.

[#502800]What do mean by light tackle? ........ I have been after tuna but no tackle under 30 lb. test,[/#502800]
[#502800]How big is the boat and how many people?[/#502800]
[#502800]I have been on the Siggi G before, for bottom fish, and I have caught tuna out of San Diego/Mexico ......... I would really like to catch some albacore, and Garibaldi is such a nice place.[/#502800]

By light tackle, I was referring to the rod. The trolling poles were a lot like trolling poles here (See the picture of Toni catching one on a trolling pole). The light tackle was a rod more like a regular ugly stick fishing pole we would use here for trout. Some of the reels were spinning reels (used for casting) ***in the picture of us holding tuna there is a casting pole in a pole holder by Toni *** and some were spool reels like the trolling reels but smaller (used for live bait fishing). The mono was probably 30# or more, I am not sure. The difference was the trolling pole did a lot more of the work than the light tackle poles.
The Norwester is a bigger boat than the Siggi-G. There were 9 fishermen, the captain and 2 deck hands. There was enough room that all the fishermen could sit in the cabin, out of the weather, if desired. There was also plenty of space to sit outside. The Siggi-G would be hard pressed to have 4 fishermen sit inside. When the trip out starts a 4:00 am and takes 2-3 hours to get to the fishing area and more to get back, the larger cabin is nice, particularly in bigger seas.
I think the Albacore may be a little smaller than the Tuna you caught in Mexico, but we sure had a good time with them.
