My boy turns 11 this week and says his primary desire is to go camping and fishing.
Given the smoke situation and heat, I'm wondering where to go, within say a 3 hour driving radius of Idaho Falls. I'd as soon stay away from the crowd at Island Park, and I'm hoping to find shade, water and decent fishing for the boy.
Any suggestions?

Happy Birthday to your son!
Not much shade on the waters of the high desert!
Maybe a cottonwood tree on the N. or S. Fork where you can cast in a worm.

You might try Birch Cr. It may be smokey, but not too close to the fires.
Otherwise I would try the smaller streams in Island Park or the tributaries of the South Fork of the Snake.
havent passes by for a while or heard many reports but warm river might be an option, if you go make sure to give a report

Warm river is a safe bet, and always has fish willing to bite.

If I were in that area I would head for McCoy creek. One of my favorite creeks to fish. Just take lots of bug spray the skeeters can get thick.

I was just going to say...I would head for the other side of the mountain. I wouldnt give specifics, but look at all the creeks that are you can access through wyoming back into Idaho. They can all be awesome at certain times.
If you fly fish that is where I would head.

Thank you to everyone for the replies. We ended up going to Meadow Lake. The first day was real smoky, but it cleared up.
Zeb caught plenty of trout (and a good sunburn).

Wish I could have helped but haven't spent much time that way. Any pics to share?

Took plenty photos of the boy, Mac, but none of the fish. Nothing remarkable... planters, averaging maybe 8" long. Plenty of fun and beautiful scenery.

Fun, beautiful scenery, and quality time with the boy. That's what it's all about.
Glad you had a good trip. I would have been happy to help, but like others, I don't know much about that area.
