Made it out to Redfish to do some spearfishing quite a few times this summer. The water is warm and clear, and the suckers are stupid and thick! It's a lot of fun and I recommend anyone give it a try! Heck I made my own spear using materials I got at Home Depot. Copper pipe, a few hose clamps, big ole screws, a PVC T and some surgical tubing is all you need.

Also want to share some fun I had at the Sawtooth Hatchery this summer working with Chinook Salmon:

rod i have seen your videos before and i love them. does your spear shoot or is it mainly jab? I have seen your video below the ladder in sawtooth and wondered how you got away with that, now i know your an insider? I love the inside view from the hatchery i would like to see more of what goes on that maybe we dont know as "outsiders". also what kind of camera do you use, and sense i will be up that way in 2 weeks give me a first hand view of the clarity from the fires (i can see the trinity fire over heyburn in the redfish video, and what i think is halstead when you threw the first fish off?). Also if your still up that way over labor day i would love to check out your setup (camera, spear, even a inside view of the hatchery?)

Hi jigs! Thanks for the reply. So, for accessing the river below the weir, that is open to anyone as far as I know-- there could be some issues with "harassing" the salmon but I doubt swimming in the river would qualify as that. Also I am not IDFG employee, just volunteer as I know some people there.
The camera I used this year is a Go Pro Hero2, it comes with a head band mount and is really a great camera.
Unfortunately I headed back to California last week, but in talking to friends up there the past two days the smoke has been hit or miss depending on the wind. Good luck to you when you come up to that country, bring a mask and snorkel and there's a lot of fun to be had in our warm, clear rivers and lakes! I really hope things could settle down with this fire, but there is talk that soon it could reach HWY 75 and power shutoff could be imminent.

i am already planning on taking a mask. I plan on retreaving a few lures i lost salmon fishing earlier in the summer [shocked]. if you could i would love to see a full picture of your spear and if its not to much trouble how it works and how you built it. thanks for your info and keep your videos coming

Nice vids there. That's a heck of a lot suckers schooled up. Bet the hard part is deciding which one to target!
Kewl salmon footage there too. Must be kinda fun being surrounded by them like that!
