Not getting that too much. I am reading the same old story here. Fly Fished off and on..."Because you never take the time to learn it correctly!"
He mentions all the problems with the leader. All which can easily be avoided with.......Practice!. He also calls the rod a flag pole. Okay he is the guy out on the water waving the rod back and forth like a windshield wiper. Probably trying to do the 10 and 2 thing. And like most newbies, he is looking at the 10 and 2 as on a clock face which means arching the rod in the middle.
No, the 10/2 should be a straight line as if the two numbers were mounted on the bottom of a shelf.
Plus, learning in a field or back yard or whatever, is always good, learning with water is better. ROLL CAST!!!! This simple lift rod, and flip/point is so productive and offers so many benefits such as obstacles behind or to the side of you. But, this can only be rehearsed with the water.
I read his frustration all the time on forums...he is in good company[cool]

Goes to show even you can't buy your way into something as simple as fly fishing with an expensive rod. I could write a similar article about golf but at least I realize anyone that can golf won't find my gross incompetence interesting or amusing.

But it certainly can't hurt[
] Not the price of the spend on gear, but the time spend learning..... to me at any rate.

Interesting read, Sounds like loosing your innocents and expecting the worse. I think its comes down to perspective and expectations on how one perceives a fly fishing day.
I think the author has set really high expectations for himself but in reality were fishing were doing what we love and enjoy. No keyboard to type on, no wrench to turn and no annoying coworker to irritate you just the water, fish & blue skies [cool]
now if we could figure out a way to quit our day jobs and just fish [angelic]
