Yuba - I went with my twin and Bscuderi to Yuba last night and today. We arrived last night at 9pm on the west beach. We set up camp and tossed out nightcrawlers in 3 fashions....... weightless, slip sinker, and bobber.
Weightless by my twin caught the 1st carp within 3 mins!
Then came the slip sinker rig by Bscurderi!
This was the most effective and we all switched to it eventually.
The wind kicked up and so did the moon. We sat there until 2:45am when the beast hit! I landed my biggest fish yet........
A 10lb 2oz carp at 28inches!
So with my 7 carp, Bscuderi's 10 carp, and Evil TDT's 1 carp we hit the sleeping bags with

s at 3:15am.
Then we were up at 6am to attack the pike.
We launched from Oasis and made our way to my spot. Sure enough within a half hour I had a pike snap me off.....must have been weakened line from the bell for the carp the night before. So within another 30mins I had a beast pike on the end of my line.
After a few minutes of battle the silly pike let go and left me skunked for the day. Bscuderi was the captain and he was determined to knock the pikey off his list of bucketeering. Luckily after a few missed bites and lots of snags he received his wish.
By 1pm the wind got really nasty and we bailed. It was nice to be the only fisherman out there till noon. A whole Yuba for the taking! I doubt I will get that this weekend.

Lots of places where abrasion takes its toll on fishing line, not just the bail of the reel. The guides are as likely to be the culprit. Whenever you battle a big 'un, you ought to discard the line that took the brunt of that kind of battle. Sometimes that's 50 feet, sometimes it's only 20.

Awesome post. I loved reading it. You guys killed those carp. And that one was a TANK. Congrats on an awesome trip.

He was using a bell when night fishing for carp and a few times he was just too excited to remove the bell and what do you know it snapped the line while fighting a carp in. That is why I think the next morning the pike broke off. He still had bad line on there.

Nice Carp you got down there. Lots of fun catching them while camping just for the hell of it huh. I'm glad you guys are getting into the Pike at Yuba. Theres nothing like fishing in the middle of the week if you can, thanks for the Report.

Yeeeummm! Way to go guys. So how much salt did ya toss on then carp 'bfore they hit the grill at 3am?
ya know me - just shirtin ya. I hooked into a 31 inch carp early spring - and I'll swear Bama could hear me laughing 50 yards down the swamp - no doubt! Fun tugs them "golden tarpon" be! I don't care WHO ya are!
I need to try it more - but there is certainly something freaky about night fishign - I"m not talking staying after the sun goes down, but them wee hours of the night.
Won't forget coming back up Cutler - shining spotlghts - to see eyes glowing back. Between coons, and deer - gets freaky (at least they weren't Moose!)
I still need to try that overnight boat venture. Toss in a bag, breakfast - and go. maybe before ice-up!
So - wire leaders? Or super heavy mono? I tied up some halatious flies on wire leaders. They're big, fluffy and ugly. I'm almost scrare to "offer" them to a Musky. Thought I'd try their little bugger brothers to Bass first. . .
thought of Pike on a fly? should. [:p]
So to start off we killed the carp and relesed the body to davey jones's locker.
Luckily there are no moose down there so I sure do sleep easier. Just the owls hooting all night and a couple of bats here and there. Oh yeah and there are plenty of cows roaming the plains of yuba too.
I used steel leader this time as I did last time after the beast of all beasts got away. Bscuderi did catch his Pike on the "bleeder leaders" that are sold at Cabelas. I switched to the bleeder type after Bscuderi at the end of the day myself. Just had to see it work is all. I know I miss a few pike because they see the leader but I think I have a few gray hairs from that pike that got away when I was with UtahGolf.
Evil Tye Dye threw flies (purple bunnies, home invader aka perchzilla, nymphs, etc.) and got the skunk. He didn't use steel leader. Just 1x tippet. He was hoping for pike or carp. None bit.
Going back Saturday and Sunday. Between the fishing (day and night), the camping, and some windsurfing I should be plenty happy by the end of the weekend.

I will be there with my dad sat-sun. If you see a spike haird guy or a windsurfer that will be me!
I will say that the better carp-ing is closer to North Beach than Oasis along the west beach. The carp are all to "common" at Yuba. I am going to fish for pike by day and carp by night.
So which carp was the mirrior? Never had caught one of them before and EvilTDT got his 1st ever carp on this trip too.

the mirror is the big one with larger scales thats covered in sand, ive got a few on the jordan and they are always cool, some can be real pretty too, which is not something said about carp.

I think they are awesome, but I do understand their threat.
North/West area huh. We will check that, but they do move, right?

[quote Flyfishinglover]Looks like no love for pikes this time what a bummer. [laugh][/quote]
Umm actually no love implies just that.....not a single hit. Technically Bscuderi caught 1 pike and I lost 2 good ones. So I guess Evil Tye Dye didn't get any love from the pikey's but 2 of us did.
You really cannot go down there and expect everyone on the boat will get one You just have to hope and try your best!

ya thats true.

I don't know, do LDR's count?[cool] You could go with the HOOKED and the LANDED thing[

No long distance releases DO NOT COUNT for us as the total numbers of fish at the end of the day.
But "no love" means no bites. I did lose 2 on the reel in. So that tells me I was throwing something they liked but either the hookset sucked or something went wrong on the way in. Either way I wasn't doing everything wrong if I managed to lose 2 of the targeted fish.
So yes I did get some love from 2 pike. Did I land any?.....
NOPE!
So the skunk stands but I did get love from the pike. Anyway Bscuderi managed one so the trip for pike was not a waste like FlyFishingLover implied.

On a regular basis I will lose a pike on the way in, more so than trout. Line tight, good hook set and everything. I don't know what or why. Next pike I am going to do a closer inspection of his mouth and see if I can figure it why. I have noticed soft mouth on part of the lower jaw in the past so I have not gone for a real hard hook set. That might be my problem.
[signature]
Pike have soft tissue around the jaw i have caught them with a piece either missing or hanging from their jaw. i let them grab and run for a couple seconds so that they have enough time to put the baits or lures in their mouths.
