I've been rather fishing deprived this summer... But a trip on Thurs to UL produced a worthy story that might be useful to someone. (Sorry, no time for clever verbiage or Photoshop entertainment THIS time. Just the facts ma'am. [Wink])

I owed a good buddy a BIG favor and he decided his payback needed to be a fishing trip. I figured this typical trout chaser would enjoy what UL had to offer. The water was a water skiers dream in the morning, glassy smooth and 74 degrees at 10 AM. (I bet that average temp starts dropping soon....)

Figger'd Provo would have good options for bass, figger'd rightly. Trollers didn't do as well as those that just anchored up near the inlet. With the bright sun, the bass seemed to use the boat as something to hide under. My buddy had a great time pulling in one after another. Note, I didn't say reeling in - the fish were often just a jig vertical jig away.

Other boats figured what we were doing and joined very nearby. The crowding was understandable enough, but now if I could just find a way to remove the image of one fellow bending over in his boat to reveal a deep butt crack that had been seared into my brain.... [crazy]

The sun disappeared behind clouds, and so did the fishies desire to congregate under us. But we had our fill, so we headed South to see if I could get us into some cat action. I'd found some willing mudders many weeks ago outside some thick reeds in less than two feet of water, but our poles got no love this time.

BUT we did see some small carp boils, so I got out my bow and we had some fun with that. Man, they were skittish... just the sight or sound of us was all it took for them to disappear. And for other bow hunters, small boils were all OVER the place just South of the Airport tower. That was, until some fellow drove by slowly with loud mariachi music playing. Once the chap opened his car door and REALLY let the sound out, all the carp decided to take their siesta somewhere else. Guess there's no counting for taste! [laugh]

Noting recent reports of cats in no less than 5 plus feet o' water - we boated over to the Bubble Up. I have NEVER figured out how to get cats out deep there... but I'm an eternal optimist - or is it masochist?

The water was only 5.5' deep at the last buoy. Fortunately, my buddy had a mudder that wanted to play out past all the buoys. So perhaps it wasn't my typical Indian spirit guide (a Skunk) that prompted me to go there. I don't usually find channels with mudders, so I shifted shallower. A veeeery slow drag of some bass meat and I had a willing channel on the line. Passed the pole to my buddy who brought in a nice 22 incher. Confidence rose about the location.

We near pulled the heads off a couple more whities with some strong hook sets meant for channels. Guess they didn't know the table wasn't served for them. They'll never do THAT again.

It was interesting how our bait ended up nowhere near where we chucked them in, so there was a definite under current going on that we found, Then, something else besides current took my bait as line started disappearing from my reel. A click of my bale and a hook set worthy of Thor and I was VERY grateful that I had strong line. My pole looked more like a horseshoe as line kept zinging off the reel. Had to let whatever it was wear out a bit, but still keeping the line taught. Much fun! [Smile] The last few feet were the toughest.

The whoop and holler of my buddy at seeing this near 28 incher in the net was worth the day. I TRIED to let him take the pole, but I was only too happy to oblige as I took a turn this time. Definitely one o' the biggest I've caught.

The gods were kind to us today, and speaking of Thor, that was about when storm clouds opened up and the thunder and lightening commenced. Wind came out of nowhere and it was a pretty bumpy ride back to Provo for my small craft. It definitely reminded me to respect that lake and be prepared and cautious.

What a great day! To each his own, but I'll let the dedicated trout chasers enjoy their own efforts and I'll stick to mine.

(Oh, and Pat. Please don't cross me off your dance card to go out and look for cats in deep water just yet. One successful trip does not a pattern make. [Wink])

Now, this topic has probably been well covered in the past, but this "student" wasn't ready at the time, and now that I've had some experience this year going for carp with a bow, I'm open to hearing what's worked for others. I believe I need to upgrade my weapon if I'm going to be more successful. I just don't think this fiberglass "camp bow" has enough pace to pull that heavy line very far and also get thru those thick toenails carp call scales. Not to mention with any accuracy.
[inline BowSetUp.jpg]

The "reel" seems to work OK though. Clever and observant folk will notice the plastic spoon taped to hold the line in place has been effective. I've never heard of any commercial products that folks just rave about. So if anyone wants to brag about what they do - I'm all ears!

[cool][#0000ff]Nice work. Roger that.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I'll bet you got some real enjoys out of the battle with the big mama. Nice nice. Glad you guys got into some whities too. Toldja they'd be there.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That is the area that I get some of my biggest fish every year...usually about October. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That is a fine looking fishing line holder (PVC) but the bow looks kinda wimpy. That solid fiberglass is not as "fast" as either a laminated or wood bow. The bows can be rated at the same pull but some will send the arrow faster. That can make a big difference in perforating carpkind.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Have your people contact my people to get our dance cards synthesized...or whatever. Still lots of good fishing before the water gets hard.[/#0000ff]

And, you've also said that where they are, from where they are not isn't always that much distance. That's confirmed! [Wink]

I got what I got to get me started. Live and learn.

In the Spring when we'd hit one, the barbs of the tip usually didn't go in far enough to even bring in the fish. I've heard stories of how the arrows can go clean thru - that I have NOT seen. Guess I'll keep lookin' at the pawn shops and garage sales. Perhaps that's the only change I need make. [Wink]

I have a partial spool of 80lb. Power Pro fishing line that you can have if you would like to try it instead of that baleing twine you have on there now. Might fly better but I would pull it in with my bare hands with a carp attached to it.
[signature]
Yeah, I've wondered about trying some kind of fishing line instead of that heavy stuff that is typically sold and used. I've tossed the idea around in my head if there is a way to attach the arrow to the line of a fishing pole then reel it in that way! [laugh] With these heavy arrows I'm sure a thin fishing line would snap, maybe braided would handle the stress. I just wonder how easily it might tangle, specially when hand lined. It's amazing how this orange stuff does untangle.

Is that Power Pro a thick braided line? I'm open to try it. Anyone else tried some kind of fishing line?

I'm curious to hear what other ideas are out there. That's why I threw the question our for all y'all. [Smile]
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]That heavy braid is provided by most bow fishing manufacturers for a reason. It works better than fishing line...braid or mono. It flows more easily from line spools, doesn't tangle as easily and it is strong enough to handle even the largest fish you might stick with an arrow.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]By the way. I just scored a good compound bow cheap at a yard sale. Let me know if you are interested.[/#0000ff]

Yeah, given the nature of folks that make a religion out of being successful at such pursuits - I kinda thought that might be the case. Buuuut, sometimes the "experts" overlook the obvious.

Me, I'm no expert AND I overlook the obvious!! [Smile][laugh][laugh]

Note sent about the bow.

Very nice report.

We hung out at the PR inlet Saturday and caught WB all day long and then decided to go across to the Knolls to check it out from the water side. Spent a while dredging WB parts hoping to hook a cat, and looking for TD's secret spot, but no luck. Great fun though and quite relaxing.

About how far north is the bubble up from the state park? I think I'll give that a go next time assuming it's not to far to drive via boat. Still want to check out Bird Island too one day.
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]Whaddayamean ya couldn't find my spot? I put a mark on the water out there. Attaching a map that shows the general area...where the two Xs are at the bottom of the map. Just keep going SW from the rocky cliffs until you find the deepest spot. Then work a line east to west in that same general depth. The "zone" extends for a couple of hundred yards once you find it. Now I'm a hotspotter.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Also attaching a map showing Utah Lake main fishing spots. The bubbleup is just south of Lindon and is closer than either Bird Island or the Knolls from Provo Harbor. If you are not locked into launching at Provo you might just want to drop in at Lindon. You can also fish all along the north shore for lots of kitties too. Water level is down and they won't be in the reeds but they will be in some area between 4 and 6 feet deep. Might have to prospect around to find the magic depth.[/#0000ff]

I'm confident that if a person can't catch fish outside the PR outlet recently, I'd be surprised if they could catch ANYthing! [Smile]

Yeah, I really wanna try the Knolls to see if I can find the cats too - and it seems that you are not the first to come away disappointed.[:/] So where exactly did you fish there? How deep of water?

I can't say specifically how far the Bubble Up is, but it isn't as far as going all the way across the lake. [Wink]Attached is a map with very general areas marked. I hope that helps.

I wish I knew where Bird Island is. I've been given the bird by a lot of catfish though on the North side of the lake. [laugh] Since my boat is so small and slow (18 mph in calm water), I haven't fished the South much at all. If someone has GPS to give me an idea, please chime in. [Smile]

sorry.... let's see if the attachment works THIS time...
[signature]
Boy Pat, nobody can beat YOU at getting out info! [Wink]

It occurred to me that other years folks have said that Bird Island is submerged. But THIS year - perhaps one doesn't need GPS and it's quite visible!

Still... dunno if I wanna be that far from shore in my small craft. When winds kick up in can be quite a ride back to the Marina and the shorter the better! [laugh]

[#0000ff]Utah Lake is a harsh pond. It can be so nice and then suddenly turn into a fierce and dangerous sea. And it seems to produce its own weather. Never mind what the forecast says. Utah Lake will do whatever it wants to do.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As has been demonstrated several times over the past year, Utah Lake is no place to be on a boat of any size when it starts to blow. But the smaller the boat and the less experienced the captain the greater the chance for becoming a news item.[/#0000ff]

Thanks Pat,

We're still getting familiar with UL, and the book I bought from you, combined with your many informative posts on this forum have shortened the learning curve dramatically.

So far, I really like the Lincoln Beach area but were still exploring.

My next trip to the Knolls will be with my personal pontoon as opposed to driving across the lake in the boat. That was quite the trek, and it's funny how close the other side looks until you've been driving forever, and you look back to find you''re only half way across.

[quote TubeDude][#0000ff]. . . [/#0000ff][#0000ff]I just scored a good compound bow cheap at a yard sale. Let me know if you are interested.[/#0000ff][/quote]

Ah my favorite deal of the day - [#000080]good [/#000080]and [#000080]cheap[/#000080]! Just how I like my dates!

Got a bud at work who is crafting some very nice looking wooden bows by hand. Don't know how well they'll work, but the look 'sharp' - so to speak.

Mighty fine "kitty" there Rog.
Here's the reel I ended up with, to go with my pawn shop compound . . . it does have a drag dial, and you can reel the fish in. Though I know whatcha mean - I've had a number of shots plink off that mirrored armor they wear!

[inline "Zebco 808.jpg"]

Can't say the line doesn't twist and tangle plenty. Expect I'll be cutting off a bird's next pretty soon. Also need to find my arrow tip - seems to have rattled off to the bottom of my boat.
Hope you're giving those Carp a "proper" release. Gotta take care of all them suckers out there, the native fishes too!
CHuckle... I just KNEW someone had tried that. [Wink] Thanks for the reply.

Good on those that can afford "the best." But I'm looking forward to trying out a "yard sale" compound. Once I see how that changes things, I'll keep your "presentation" in mind. [Wink] In case I do, whad'ya string that baby with?

And oh yeah, I do release my carp unharmed - the only question is in how many pieces! Can't say that I've ever even seen a Junie. (I hope the carp removal program is still in full swing and that it's helping as suggested. I'd love to think that it's been part of the reason why the whiteys have been so good lately. [Smile])
