I already answered this, but will make this short. Rivers it is a do able solution, but the connection to the heads do hang up. They are not a smooth flow of the line.
They are also 15'. Do you plan on fishing 15' or deeper?

One cheap solution, that I use, especially, in back pack situation or where I am in a pontoon boat fishing a floating line but find the need for a short sinking tip, is to cut up short sections of varied length from a used type 3 or 4 sinking line. Personally, I find one each in 3 foot, 6 foot and 10 foot to be enough for most fishing. The forward section (first 30 feet) of an old WF sinking line should provide enough length for all three tips.
I have never saw where a 15 foot tip is needed. A 10 foot with a beaded fly will get plenty deep. I turn the ends of the cut line back into loops, which you can just change easy, or go back to a floating line that is proper and easy to cast.
It might save you some money and keeps an old sinking line in use for longer time.
Edited to add, I forgot to mention when you make the loops for loop to loop connection, make them kind of large so to prevent hinging. Loops are easy to make with heavy fly tying thread and some water proof rubber type cement.

I fish rivers and streams by far more than lakes, I think for the most part 15 ft would cover most applications that I would use and if I needed to get deeper couldn't I just run a long leader down to weighted flies to get down? I suppose that wouldn't be as effective as going straight sinking for those applications but I really think the versitip would cover most applications for me.
In the end I more want to know how the line has performed for those who have used it.

I have the Orvis and Rio multi tip spey. They function well enough. Just harder "for me" when you use a 9' or shorter rod. I wish I could let you try one of mine. Again the connection can be a pain.
But I get the idea. It is a sound idea and many have done it.
I mainly use one sinking line when on rivers and that is a Type II wet cell.

makes me want to buy a switch rod even more hearing that, I have a friend that is in love with his fishing the river here but it just seems like it would get in the way with the amount of hiking I end up doing.
So you would say that on a 9' rod it isn't great? where do your issues come in with it, just with the loop connections getting caught up in the tip guide or does it not turn a tight loop because of the extra hinge?

I wish I had tried it last week while on the Snake.[:/]
The problem is landing fish. Also trying to cast it from tight places when bring the line in closer is involved.
I think the Snake is perfect for it however. Oh and Rio made the Orvis line.
The only problems might come in fishing smaller rivers or creeks.
