Sorry no purdy pix to tell the story. It was getting dark, was too busy with hooks, bait, pitching - - - uh, yeah.

Went a bit farther north than usual, and fished along the roadside. Pitched some curly jigs, dropped some shot of worms off bottom, tossed some big bass plastics.

Hooked up with a burly dark SmallMouth - under footer, but fought like a champ (fricking cheater locked up behind a log-jam before I let him swim out, and gained ground).

Had a passive dropshot worm let out, while I pitched a plastic. Came back to find the rod hand changed angle - the rod holder hung on (good thing) while I reeled and reeled. Had the drag let so loose - this sucker had taken it for a long long journey! Managed to wrap over a branch in the venture, but I reeled, and pulled - till I got 'em in - a fat carp - probably 8lber - had nabbed my worm and ran downstream. Glad I got to keep my rod, the holder, and land the fat son of a . . .

Hooked into a small gill, but still didn't find any crappie. Another bass - this time a Largie - came to play. Decent, but still in the underfootclass. Seemed the theme for the day.
As sunset moved in, the kitties came on. Hooked up some niblet channels, followed by more and more. Haven't been on such a big school of little fish for quite some time.
Thought I'd nab a few for a small fish-fry. Fish fry of small fish - that is!

So - alas - no Walleye this time around, and didn't find the big-fat-channel I sure would have liked to find. But a non-stop peckering of punks was enjoyable all the same.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get the boat out, and bring the camera - and get on that river adventure that brings on the Big Bass, Walleye, and Crappie Galore! Maybe some Kitties too...
I was up there last night too, though probably a little south of you. A friend showed me some of the crappie he has been catching there recently, and I wanted in on it. I asked if he was going to be out there, but he said he thought it was too cold now. So when the opportunity presented, I ran up there for the last hour before dark. I caught 4, and 3 of them were the best crappie I have caught in a few years. That is not to say there were objectively large, only 9-10", but that is big compared to the ones I catch at Newton. It was fun, although I lost a ratio of one jig to a snag for every fish I caught in that hour. I chalk that up to the theory that if you aren't snagging, you aren't fishing where the fish are.

Sounds like things are slowing down a bit. The wife wants to go out one more time before it gets too cold for her so we'll be on Cutler Sunday if it's not raining or too windy. She loves the Crappie.
Caught wind that Hyrum is really hot right now, have to try that again soon.

Maybe we'll cross paths another time. Wonder if I know your crappie friend? I run around in a silver Pilot, if ya happen to run across me. I'll be wanting to poke around a few more spots on that river before ice-up. Didn't get to floating today. But the weekends coming upon (though I've been hearing about Hyrum...)

I've never caught much for crappie at Newton, and those were at best 10 inchers. Pretty all the same, but I guess before the musky - they used to get pretty chunky.

Those river crappie have been good to me this year (after SO many years of mudcats - WHEW - is all I can say!)

Those 10" plus - start getting some nice filets on 'em. Well -compared to perch and gills anyway. I've been impressed with the jump from 10 to 12. Still waiting to run across biggerer ones. The start getting taller and thicker faster. Guess that's why some of my friends measure by "hands" rather than length.
What kinda time you thinnin' to hit Cutler? Am/Pm?

Didn't make it to the river today, but now you got me tossed. Been wanting to bop up to Hyrum sometime before ice sets in.
Whats it been hot for? Bitty finless freddies? I heard the perch were back. Hope I can find them this ice season.

Hmmm - maybe if I do Hyrum sat, hit Cutler sun . . . woops - missed the river trip.... SO much water - so little time...
I know the feeling. I have a long list of places to hit before winter, and hardly any time. I want another smallmouth trip, another largemouth trip, a stillwater trout trip, as well as fishing several trout streams that need my attention. Darned work taking all my time.

The wife said about 10 am, probably be on the water about 10:30.
I heard that Hyrum was good for everything right now especially the trout 12-14 inches with some in the 18-20 range. Good luck maybe we'll see you Sunday.

Hey Rod & Yote Hyrum was fun today we had a blast but we only fished for trout but it was fast action. Good luck in the morning. Later J

Wow what a bummer Sunday, we got a bit later start than planned still on the water by noon. The fish were really tight lipped, had a couple light bites. Tried everything I had even nightcrawlers, only caught one catfish (20") and a carp. the wife finally gave up without catching anything. She said she's done until next year. Water temp 51 and not as murky. I guess Hyrum here I come.

Sorry they didn't bite, hope I didn't catch the last ones. I think you'll like Hyrum though it was pretty fun. Later J
