Hey guys, I'm fairly new to Salt Lake City. I moved here from the Dallas, Texas area about 3 weeks ago. I've been reading on the forums here and got some pretty good ideas as to where to try but am having a hard time adjusting. I've never fly fished before, and only fished for trout one time. I've been limited to crappie, cat, LMB, SMB, and occasional carp. Anything else y'all talk about is like trying to decipher hieroglyphics.
Any advice is appreciated, such as on: where to start, what kind of equipment to buy, and promising spots as to where i can go to get a feel for this new environment. So far i've been to the Jordan river( in SLC, as well as at the mouth of Utah Lake), and some place called Decker lake that i tried when i got off work (i work across the street from it). I've caught about 10 white bass in total among all the places.
Like i said, I've been in Texas so i can pretty much catch a catfish, bass, etc out of a rain puddle. These new fish, their habits, locations, and gear recommendation would be very helpful. Not asking for secret spots or methods, just a little something to get me started here.
Thanks, TFG [bobhappy]
Edit* - I have no boat, no float, just my fishing pole and a little bit of basic tackle. I would be interested in any type of fishing. Ive done a little bank fishing. Sorry forgot to say that in the original post.

TFG : welcome buddy! BFT is a great site to learn as well as meet fellow addicts to this addictive sport.. Here in Utah and the salt lake valley you will have many options of species to chase.
Bass - wipers, smallies and largies
panfish: perch, crappie, gills, sunnies..etc
trout: all species
pike, tiger muskies
channel and mudcats
walleye etc
Utah has many species to chase and some of the best Tiger Muskie fishing in the country.
There are many fellow bft'ers that will show you the rope in the slc area, hit up the Tye Dye twins and they will gladly give you insight and maybe take you on one of their adventures
again welcome and enjoy all the awesome fishing utah has to offer!

Anytime you feel like coming along you are more than welcome. Dive through my posts and my twin's posts (evil tye dye twin) and you will get a feel for what we like to do. I have had a northern pike obsession lately but that is slowing down.
Is hiking your thing?
I would say the best trout lure is a gold blue fox size #2. But there are so may options out there it is unreal!

That sounds great! I'm actually headed to little dell now . Fairly close to me . I picked up a blue fox today so will definitely give it a shot. Let me know when you're heading somewhere. I work nights so I'm open anytime during the day. Again, I appreciate you guys helping me out.

Gold kastmaster works wonders at Little Dell. Give a report when you get home. Last year around this time the fishing was great up there. Then again we were in multipul jackets and wearing snowpants. So maybe when it gets colder it will get better.
Lately the morning sessions are best up there. That is half the reason I wanna hear how you do up there. Stick to the inlet side and bring your $5 for the entrance fee. Remember to release your cutthroats. If you manage a brown or a brookie you can debate if you want to keep it. Have fun!!!!

Had no luck all afternoon but tried about 5 different setups .im hoping I get it down soon. The people on either side of me were landing brookys left and right (literally and figuratively). The one guy left and gave me a tye dye dare devil and got a few hits on that. All got off though. I think I'm good luck to the people who are fishing near me. Keep that in mind if anyone needs a companion. I'll be back out at sunrise to try again.

I can meet up with you at sandy pond or willow pond and show you a thing or two. Just pm me with your schedule. I can show you what I use and point out the best shops around to buy gear.

There are a few transplanted Texans here on the Utah forum (I'm one of them). If I understand you correctly, you are *not* wanting to go after crappie, bass, catfish, or carp. You want to chase trout. Correct? If that is the case, there are plenty of knowledgeable slimer hunters on this forum. Are you wanting to try your hand at fly-fishing or are you sticking to lures/bait fishing?
Anyhow, welcome. Hope you enjoy your fishing experience here in Utah. I grew up about 100 miles east of Dallas and fished all over East Texas. I can honestly say that I my fishing experience here in Utah has been amazing. You may need to learn new tactics and chase some new species but you will enjoy it. Tons of good places to fish.
