The forecast for the week had me pretty down. I was thinking back about the past few autumns and some of the memorable trips I've had, and this fall just didn't have any killer bass days. I was able to get Monday off of work at the last minute, but the weather wasn't looking good. I was about to scrap my plans of catching a few more bass this year, but something pushed me to layer up and head north anyway.
I arrived at the lake to find wind and light rain. I decided to fish from shore for a bit to see if the fish were even still active, plus it would make it easier to ditch the trip if the weather took a turn for the worse. I began throwing a jerkbait parallel to shore and quickly hooked into a feisty bass, but it pulled free after a couple of runs. I kept at it, and a moment later I landed my first bass of the day.

I caught a half a dozen more like it when the rain stopped and the sun teased me about coming out for a moment. That was good enough for me, so I blew up the tube, donned my waders, and had at it. That was a good decision.
That jerkbait tore it up for the next five hours. The bass were cruising the shoreline, and the lure suspending in their faces was too much for many a bass. The majority looked about like this guy.

A foot long, give or take an inch. I did catch a few better ones too.

Almost all the fish took the jerkbait, though a few, including this 17" fatty,

crushed a lipless crank. The weather was all over the place. One moment the water would be glass and the sun would be shining, the next the wind would be blowing me all over the lake as I was pummeled by sleet. It didn't seem to matter to the fish.
I was careless and didn't check my line frequently enough, and a nice bass snapped off my cherished lure. It was even
der knowing these things retail for around $25. Luckily I had another, and I made sure to check for nicks in the line after every fish. I was up to around 65 fish as I made my way back to the dam. I decided to make a few casts right around that area, and low and behold, there were a bunch of bass there.

A couple of acrobatic trout too.

I ended the day with 102 bass and 2 trout. Despite the 51 degree water, I was really impressed by the fight of the bass. Many of them even jumped several times. While I was dreading the coming of winter, this phenomenal day really took the sting out of the coming white.
