So for Halloween I dressed up in all my wading gear and went as a fly fisher. And I did not want to take my normal rod because its just to big to carry around trick or treating with my boys, so I grabbed my frabill 26" light action ice rod and put my fly reel on it. And I started playing with it, I found it rather easy to cast kinda "CUTE" looking. So ive decided to try and use it on my next creek fishing journey. Also I learned neoprene waders are no good for trick or treating. You get rather hot pretty fast in them.. Has any one else ever tried a ice rod for a fly rod? If not I recomend trying it out its a little different feeling in the hand but none the less comfortable and I was able to get out aprox 30 feet accurate casts out of it.. Here is a picture of it..

That's an interesting idea. Let us know how it works out for you.

If you can get 30' out accurately, then I say you have a winner. I am interesting in actual stream fishing. Might be a bit tough to mend, or roll cast, but maybe not.
HFT just built a glass 4'6" rod...got to be close to the same thing.

I use a 5' 3 wt that is just a blast. It is definately one of my favorite rods.

I have a glass 5'3" 4/5 that is a bit of a canon. It is very pickie what line is strung on it. Found TT line works
well.

My first was a Fly Lite. Even came with a tiny reel that wouldn't even quite hold a full spull of 3 wt. which is just fine. I got it more for the novelty but that changed very quickly when I used it. It broke and I was so bummed. I found a guy on ebay who makes small fly rods and other custom stuff and got it. I am sure someone local does it and does it well but that is what I found. It is graphite and is just so much fun. It really is my go to rod most whenever I am dry fly fishing unless pretty big water.

I used to own a couple of nice Banty Fly Rods...the term Banty is the classification for fly rods around 5 feet or shorter in length. I am a die hard tight quarter brookie fanatic and I fished these two rods (one a 3wt Bamboo 4'4" long, the other a 4'8" 0wt) a lot. I learned a few things the few years I fished them....they work very well in their intended application and very poorly in all other applications. I too could get over 20 foot casts with the 0wt (I used a Sage QDT 000wt line on it and the tiny Dennison reel only held 1/2 of it) and I could get over 30 feet with the Bamboo 3wt (I used 1/2 a DT 4 on the tiny Forbes reel which loaded better with short casts), anyway, the rods really do perform good in tight. I could hold the rod at a 45 deg down angle and make short cast under brush.
Ok, back to reality. The problem was, they do roll cast poorly as Flygoddess said and in many conditions, a roll cast is all you can do. I had to crowd good water to get close to fish then I would end up spooking the hole. I went back to my 6'9" 4wt bamboo or even the 7'6" 2wt carbon rod for all my tight quarter small stream fishing. The rod was not too long to get int tight places with, yet I could back cast better, getting the line up above bushes behind me, or if needed, I could roll cast....then if I happened onto a beaver pond, I was well armed...where a short banty rod, while cool, would just leave you undergunned. so to speak.
But banty rods are cool and you ought to try it...your opinion of them might end up being different.

Unfortunately, many think taking an old 9' or so Bamboo and using part off the tip portion of the rod adding a reel seat and cork makes it a Banty. This is not the case. The flex is all wrong.
Banty is a short rod not a "shortened" rod, built that way from the start as a rod should perform from tip to butt. Not saying yours is not a true Banty. Orvis made a sweet one.
I found a sweet 6'6" 4 wt glass at Cabela's for $60. It can roll cast at least 30 feet. One might be lucky to find more of the first generation. The new models are fantastic but a bit more money

It is possible to make anything work. Heck you could attach line to a broom stick or better yet an old CB radio antenna.
It all comes down to what works for one. I like it light and easy[

] But accurate as heck[cool]

Yep. If you use the top two sections of a 3 pc 9 foot 6wt bamboo, thinking you will end up with a 4wt stream rod, you will be wrong.
I like the new glass line up of cabelas...the old ones were equally good but I hate green colored glass rods. The new line up takes on a more retro look...reminding me distantly of early fenwicks. The new Cabelas 6'2" 2wt looks like it would make an ideal tight quarter brookie rod...good in close yet still capable of making decent roll casts.
I picked up a Redington Classic Trout 7'6" 2wt on closeout for 90 bucks (I over line with a WF 3 to aid in close cast loading) and it stays in my car. I've used in on most of this years small stream fishing around the region. For a carbon rod, it is slow enough for tiny flies, yet still enough punch for canyon breezes.

Lordie, I think GREEN is my favorite color in a Rod...LOL
However Red is nice
I do believe the Cabela's Glass has Graphite incorporated in them to make them a little lighter and faster.

LOL. At the risk of hijacking this thread....I must say - I own a green rod that I call the "Big Green" I have always wanted one of Sages Bass Fly rods but could never could afford one at first. I bought one of ROSS' Fly Stik 7'11" 6wts. (Ha...it takes a WF 8 line to load it). It is my goto rod for chucking weighted buggers and clousers. I hate the light metallic green color but the rod is a performer. Later I bought Sage's Smallmouth rods and found it though prettier, I preferred the action of the Ross Fly Stik. So I do have a green rod. I would like to put a bright orange reel on it....you know, as long as I am going to fish with an ugly rod, I might as well make it far out too. lol
