Was fishin at UL last week, and a friend caught this awesome sunfish. I thought it was a giant blue gill till we checked the proclamation. 10"L 10 1/2girth enjoy
That's a pretty big one! Good for him.
(Although you were right at first. Bluegill.)

Sorry, but that is a bluegill all the way. And a very nice one at that. What about the proclamation made you think it was a green sunfish? Don't go by coloration. Green sunfish have a longer body shape and larger mouth that extends back to the eye.

That is one very nice Bluegill !! Did you happen to get a weight on it ?? What did it hit??

I concur, that is exactly what you said at first, a giant bluegill, a pure bred bluegill at that. I've caught many hybrid green sunfish bluegill crosses and this is not one of those either, it's a pure male gill. Very nice but not surprising out of utah lake. Plenty 9 inchers in there and a good number of 10's. No need for pelican lake haha.

mouth is really small for a green sunfish, I would concur with the others, definitely a bluegil

I never seem one that big before, the lack of vertical stripes kinda made me lean toward sunfish. But I see the shape and mouth definitely match, it was caught on shrimp and was 1/2 pound (but was hard to read on a bigger scale). [

Here is a green sunfish, I think you'll be able to see the difference, they are a lot less rounded and more pointy and bigger mouths... But that is a nice fish no doubt... good job... Later J

This Green Sunfish was 2 inches off the state C&R. I was caught at Willard Bay and looked like a smallmouth bass when it came close to the boat. It was 8.5 inches long.
At 10 inches you sure did get a nice gill.

Well since this has turned into the "look-at-this-green-sunfish" thread [

], here is mine from a while back.

Love catching those little dudes! They will hit bigger baits and they are

.
Either way, the pics of that gill from the original poster are great. There are some really nice, healthy gills in Utah Lake if you can find 'em.

Not fishing nearly enough. Hoping we get a good winter and that I wear out the new blades on my ice auger. :-)
