My twin and FlyFishingLover decided to join me for a Lake Mary Adventure. Well an adventure has many definitions. This time we just happened to be in the parking lot while my backcountry group was there. Hmm, how rude, no phone call?
We hiked and skinned up to Lake Mary. The group split into the backcountry fisherman and backcountry skiers. I approached the ice and this time there was not open water. But it was fools gold!!!!
I stepped on it and my twin reported he saw the ice ripple. He kept that under his breath though. Sure enough about 10 feet out I felt the ice swallow the lower half of my body. Almost up to my waist I yanked on the safety rope and was pulled up the enbankment.
The ice was rotten even though the day before on my scout trip it looked good. Watery slush on top of maybe one inch to 2 inches. So we made the best of it and headed for the car. Powder turns were in the epic catergory. A few face shots of powder sure did add to the colder lower half of my body! It took a long time in the heated house and the shower to get warm again.
After reading threads based on drive by's on Echo and East Canyon this does belong in the general fishing section.

WOW!!!!! glad you are ok and that you took a few precautions. You do push the limits. Its great that you have a tale of adventure to offer in the future, it could have been the final adventure. The snow probably insulated the ice and the combined weight of tons of snow probably weakened it. Cold trek home.

That was my guess as well on the ice conditions. On Oct.28th it was a colder storm with less snow. With the 4 feet of snow I am sure it had a lot to do with it.
Just glad the last time I went Oct 27 (which was a ice scouting trip I did alone) I did not go through. I was all alone that evening and walked a ways out there. Luckily my twin joined me the Oct.28th session and I got a fish out of it.

All the toes still work. No pics were needed of me getting out of the drink.
The ice thickness chart is decent but in-valid. 2 inches is safe and 1.5 is pushing it. It all depends on the condition of that thin ice. This case it was rotten due to the recent snow. The 1st time it was a whimpy snow event but cold enough for good ice.
I will probably join the ice fishing comp this year.

Well I hope I didn't jinx you the night before, but glad you were prepared for what happened. Guess your pants froze solid before you made it out hope no frost bite. Later J

I only have 2 rules I follow when ice fishing. One is never be the first person on the ice and the second is don't be last person on the ice.
I think if you are constantly pushing the envelope every year eventually it will get you.

Jealous of the epic turns. I didnt make it out this storm, but I got my splitboard and skins ready to go. I'll have to try and go backcountry with you guys this year. My ski partner moved to Washington so i currently have no one to go with. I'd like to try a ski/ice fishing adventure.
Is there a good forum for backcountry skiing. I haven't been able to find one although I've seen your adventure posts on summitpost.org. cool stuff.

There is a forum that Kotchanut runs that is in it's infancy stages. Sent a PM with the link.

i will NEVER ice fish, but i will stand on shore and watch. Wiperhunter posted a video of the Burbot Bash from a year or two ago, there were so many people on the ice that the deck bowed downwards and some water came on top..... thats defenitly not my cup of tea. i would rather wade naked in the river in the dead of winter then walk on water.
