Were you one of those on the ice? Would like more info.
There were reports from the 9th and 10th that the lake was still open water. Having a hard time believing the lake froze over over-night to a safe thickness...

This happens every year like clock work. I would just like to remind everyone that there is no such thing as "safe" ice and early ice is thin and unpredictable. Be safe have fun, lets not have any tragedies this year.

Hello all. I'm making the leap from lurker to contributor. I live in Island Park and fish Henrys Lake, the reservoir, and all the local rivers and streams. I just checked the State Park at Henrys Lake and can confirm the lake appears to be 90 percent frozen. There was one individual ice fishing about 50 yards off the parking lot. I did not talk to him, so I have no idea how thick the ice is, but I'm sure it is not too thick at this point.
We had 8 below zero on Sunday but the past two nights were around 20.
I'll try to keep you updated on the ice conditions.

Great to have you here. I am going to Henrys this weekend and was wondering if I needed to bring a boat, I will bring the ice gear. Wish it was colder the next few days and nights.

Welcome aboard! Good to have someone from the local area there that might be willing to post accurate updates on local conditions?.
I absolutely agree with WR on safe ice. Use extreme caution. The weather forecast for the next 4 days is mid to upper 30's. Thin ice can disappear fast. Don't know about others, but I would rather avoid the whole ice bath thing.[crazy]

Thought I would post this as a reminder to everyone to be safe. Not looking to start a debate about what is and isn't safe ice, I just don't want to read about anyone going through the ice in the newspaper!

With the temps we have had around here the last few days I wouldn't even think of going near that deck. Forecast a week to two weeks out looks good for ice making.

Never saw the temp go below freezing the whole weekend, This morning and all day 37 to 40. On and off light rain and sleet most of the day. This afternoon there was water on the ice and it looked like the ice on the west side was pushed toward the middle and filled the open water. Fished Saturday and saw 3 other groups out and the fish were the most active that I have seen but light bighting. It was hard to get the hooks out due to them flipping all over. Largest was a 19"hybrid and cut and 16" brook broke off a big one also. 50 % were a foot or less. Caught about 50 between 6 poles in the group. no bait = no bite, type didn't matter Saturday started with 4" and ended with 3 1/2 " of ice at dark.

Anyone that sets foot on that ice is nuts! Me and my buddy launched a boat at Jared's Wild Rose Thanksgiving day and fished all day on open water. Saw some guys at the count boat dock on ice. I don't get it. Why risk it?

5" of clear ice is suppose to support a snowmobile( I wouldn't try it).
3" for a person and 12 for a car. Saw a suburban on Bear Lake once that drove over the pressure ridge with open water in spots on the SW corner. Stupid people. For me it is 4" min of clear ice and 5" if there are others that want to fish side by side IF I KNOW THE AREA. I have been on 1 1/2" in 2 'of water by shore and less that 2" of river ice in a rescue situation with a dry suit. lifejacket and about 500' of rope to a shore crew at night and that was spooky. I do not like ice in the spring that may be 8+' but it is soft ,milky color with cracks . Or places with underwater springs and thin ice spots like Pala
es and some places at Henrys.
I almost put a boat in at Ririe on Thanksgiving but the wind that morning changed my mind, then it stopped when I got to Idaho Falls.
