Full Version: Favorite Ice Gizmos

So we've talked boots, talked finders and vex's, reels, and jigs.

What's your favorite ice fishing gadget or gizmo?
I'll start with a UV-LED flashlight, WAY worth it over a regular flashlight for charging up glow jigs. Glow is the way to go!

Then there's the Jawjacker. I have yet to actually hookup a fish with it, but the potential to watch a shallow caught Perch come flying out the ice-hole!
Then there was that magic moment I turned to the Jacker and said "NOW" and it Popped! But alas, no fishy fishy.

Though I get more use out of my Mr Jiggers - thinking if I put one on a higher stand, add a pinwheel - then the wind will make it bounce for me...

My favorite jigs are made of Tungsten Marmasooka, and at the top of the heap, these jewel encrusted beauties. Can even see them flash and glint in the light of the underwater camera.

And don't forget the Action Bite spring bobbers:

Yote I kind of like my tote all fixed up with pole holders and BFT stickers it hauls all my junk safely and is way faster to load and unload for trips. I have a mount for the fish finder so it's like my boat on skids. It slips in and out of the sled with ease it's a lot better than when I put the same stuff on my sled. Just need to add the snack bar this year maybe a habachi grill for cooking a snack on ice. Later J

Those action spring bobbers look nice. I;ve use other variations over the years, but the clip on has gotten my attention. Where can one find them locally in Salt Lake?

here is a trick i have heard of and not tried taking a hand full of silica sand and dropping it down a hole its said to flash kinda like glitter and look like little fish scales causing the fish to feed don't know if it works or not

This probably falls under the chumming rules:

"Chumming is prohibited on all waters except Lake Powell. (Chumming means to dislodge or deposit into the water any substance, not attached to a hook, line or trap, which may attract fish.)

it looks as if it may like i said i have not done it but have heard people trying it before now i know not to try
thats kinda funny the wind chums for me all the time then we all know how good it is to work the mud lines with a rapala when it blows just right

Now, if you can find a way to attach it to a line?

I have not found them locally. You can go direct to the "creator" or here's a couple other links. (no affiliation, though I think K2Musky might have an in with them?)

They aren't cheap ($6) but they have a great guarantee, plus they say if you send them a photo of a catch with one, they'll send you a freebie. Problem is - hadn't see how I could send an "E"-photo, oughta get a hardcopy one of these days.

ActionTackle they've got some other jigs and spinners an such

Other sellers:

One thing I like about them, with the clip system - you can slide it down then tighten your line to the reel. But you aren't torquing the spring to do so. I've even cast with them (not on ice - silly!). Used them when vertical jigging from the boat even.

As for the sand slinging, I'd heard from an old coot who used to toss mud in the water - gets the fish excited. Said he'd done it right in front of an officer, with no issue.
Though - as quoted, seems a no no.
So when I get to the end of the worm tub and fling out the last of the mud - I'm in violation?
I guess for that sake - removing that last bit of worm and tossing it in the water is a violation too.
Guess I won't confess to that then.

Skunky- got a picture or your setup? Think I've seen it before, but I'm exploring ideas to make a stand to share my FFinder, and Camera. Too old and crickety to bend over for that camera all the time! And it just don't sit right in it's case as designed...

just need to learn how to pack light at take less stuff (anyone who knows me is ROFLing right now!)
Yote I still have puter issues at home so I'll try putting a picture in the post tomorrow at work before I'm on the clock. It's not too exciting but it works for me. Later J

Yep that bite indicator is the best we've used. You are correct only found them roughly 4-5 years ago at the Riverdale SW haven't seen them since. I did provide samples to Anglers Den in Roy and also asked SW in Riverdale to try and stock them..but haven't seen them stocked. I was in contact with the guy who makes them out of Michigan and able to get at a huge discount last year on a bunch and I gave them out to folks. So as of now the only place one can get them that I know of is from the maker.

Oh and here is one of our gizmos...not really 'fishing' equipment but must have equipment for us.

So, throwing sand is chumming, what about rocks? Isn't chumming something to eat? I may be wrong but earth to earth, I don't see that as chumming. But you need to wear a mask when handling this stuff. Effects are ugly and irreversible. Wouldn't want it around kids.

Yote,
Pix attached, sorry not great photo's... Later J

Nice idea there Skunked! I'm going to be copying some parts of your setup. Last time I dragged off the ice it was a comedy (for everyone but me) to keep all the accessorites in the (too small) sled. A couple totes will go a looooong way towards solving that issue and provide for utility on the ice.

Thanks for posting the pics.

Can't take all the credit, I seen someone last year on the site that had the tote idea and I kind of added my twists to it, but it's been great for helping save spilled tackle up and down the trail to upper Hyrum, plus it is nice to have a table once on the ice, I know I really liked it and I think you'll find it useful as well... Sure saves me time and headaches...Later J

wow a quick google search:

must be taken to keep the silica sand out of the lungs. Failure to wear a respirator or mask can result in lung irritation, and prolonged exposure can cause a chronic condition known as silicosis

Silicosis has no ready treatment, and can cause severe pain or death. Additionally, silicosis increases the likelihood of secondary infections, such as tuberculosis, and has been linked to an increased incidence of lung cancer.

One of my favorite mega-words is a lung disease common to hard-rock miners. Ready for this?

Pneumoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoneosis

This post has nothing to do with fishing. I just can't help myself sometimes...

Unreal. That was going to be my username here, but some jack-wagon already has it!

Zowee - has "supercalifragilistics" written all over it. Have to add THAT one to my 'dicktionary'

FWIW - was reminded the past weekend that we've got a family mineral named "Wyllieite" and my mum even has a "Rosemaryite" named pacific for her. Helps to have friends in the right places!!!!
[cool][#0000ff]And how do you feel about using the "John"?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I'm guessing that it was named after another famous personage with the same name. On the other hand you might look into getting royalties whenever anybody else uses your namesake.[/#0000ff]
