Twin Lakes - After seeing pics of some nice cutthroat trout caught from Twin Lakes I felt I needed a rematch. As you might recall my twin and I failed to land fish there...under the ice and open water.
Hookedher and I were on a mission to get my revenge.
Dam what a great sight!
So it was hookedher that got the 1st cutty of the day at his spot............
Then I got one to match...............
By 2pm we headed to the upper lake for a spot of mine where the action was better.....
Here is a nice string of 3 cutts in 3 pics of mine
Then Hookedher landed the pig of the day at 16 inches long!
By 4:30pm we headed down. I managed 7 cutthroat trout. Hookedher got around 6 cutts. The ski run down was freshly groomed. Nothing better for a victory lap IMO!

Glad to see that you didn't let 'er get the best of you. There's nothing like persistance.
How thick was the ice?

Good Job!!! I confess to never catching a fish out of Twin Lake, but, then I have never fishied it through the ice either[:p]. Great way to start the year on ice even though it isnt your first ice outing. Thanks for sharing.

Nice job that looks like a fun trip. Where is this twin lakes and how far back in? You may get me to try a back country ice fish trip if I could figure out how to reduce my gear. Do you take an auger? Since you've done this enough you probably are learning pretty well what gear is essential and what to leave home. I may try taking my scout troop on one of these adventures. If so I'll get a hold of you for some tips. Thanks for telling the story. Later J

If you choose to follow the adventures for yourself please keep in mind that avalanches are a very real danger up there. Avalanche assessment skills are essential!
If you do not have beacons, shovels, probes, and the knowledge to use these items you have no business going up there.
There is a reason there isn't any trees around these lakes! Twin Lakes is especially hazardous. Many times people traverse above you from the fantasy gate at Solitude and can trigger slides above the lake, not to mention the natural avalanche potential from the east facing slopes.
Three years ago I was headed to Twin Lakes pass. My twin and I skinned up there and when we looked back a natural avalanche had gone right over the skin track (the hiking trail) we just made.
So yes I do carry a hand ice auger that has a custom extension built by Tube Dude. Twin lakes is about 2 miles in from the brighton parking lot and close to 2,000 vertical feet one way.

I'm a former sledhead so you know I have no avalanche smarts at all. That's a big elevation gain in a short distance. Guess I better get some conditioning going if this fat old man is going to make it. I think I'll find a different pond to try that is closer to my neck of the woods but I know the fish won't be as big as you found. I probably won't make it this year since I don't have an opening until the snow will be too deep, but maybe next year. Well maybe it would give me a good chance to try my skins and bindings on my backcountry skis. Probably won't take the scouts though. Later J

grateful sledhead - ha ha.
I'm thinking Tony's Grove would be a likely option - but probably earlier in the season - I've heard it suffers a lot of winterkill. I've skiied up there along various trails, and sometimes down the roadway.
Not sure when they close the road, nor when the lake freezes.
So boyz - nice icing adventure, but where's the BFT banner and entry pix? You guys getting in the contest or no? You get into quite a variety of troutsicles on those mountain adventures...

I was thinking White Pine but Tony would reduce the walk. I think you can still drive to Tony the backcountry skiers keep that opened until the snow gets pretty deep. I haven't fished Tony since they drained it are there any decent fish back in there? I think Hyrum is still a better option but it's not ice fishing yet. Don't know if the ice would be safe on Tony yet but it might. Well doubt I'll get it tried but it sounds fun. Later J
