Okay I know no one likes to give out this info over the forum but I'm thinking about one last boat trip tomorrow morning and I want to hit Hyrum but if its starting to ice up I don't want to play. Has anyone seen what is going on at Hyrum today? The Bear River froze last night so that's a good indicator that Hyrum may go soon if it hasn't already. You can PM if you don't want the world to know. Thanks J

Hyrum always freezes a few weeks later than Mantua.
Deeper water and elevation.

Do you think with the lower levels this year it might freeze sooner? I'd hate to get over there and find it frozen. Thanks for the thoughts. J

Very well could be the case this year. Won't take as long for the lake to turn because the depth isn't what it usually is.

Well I tried it this morning but it was too late. Hyrum is froze about a half to three quarter inch this morning. So I went to try Willard and it was froze. The marina had about 1.5 ? Inches. It held me but was really cracking so I got off. Ran into BullRider from BFT there checking it out as well. Then I stopped at Mantua on the way home and if I wasn't 3/4 chicken and would have taken my ice gear. I would have tried it. It was holding me okay without cracking or sagging too much. I punched a hole with my leather man and it was about 2.5 inches at the ramp. I think it's twin ice so if ya take a life jacket and spikes and maybe snow shoes or cc skis and leave all your electronics home you might get a day in before the crowds show up. If it stays cold I think Christmas Eve might be safe enough for me. Well Merry Christmas. Later J

Any new info on hyrum ice wanna go tomorrow

Heard someone threw rocks on it and water came gushing out. So it's probably still too risky. But I haven't been there since Friday and I don't think it could be safe yet. It was only 3/4 inches then. Later J

We are thinking maybe Newton because I'm chicken on 2 inch ice. Even though I think Mantua has better fish. Good luck. J

So when we're you thinking Newton? Coyotespinner and I are heading out there in the morning.

I'm thinking it will probably be 7:30 ish when we get there but I haven't gotten anything together so I may run late. I don't have any waxies, do you think I can catch my first perch on shrimp? I'll have to start getting serious about this ice fishing now Christmas priorities are past. Where in Logan has wax worms that opens early? Tried Walmart the other day and they only had nightcrawlers. Do you fish close to the dam or up to the other end? I haven't fished newton for years I hope I don't get skunked. We'll come over and say "hey" if we see you guys. It's been a long time since I fished with you two, it sounds fun. See ya there. Later J

Custom Sports is the only place I found waxies but they don't open til 10. I can give you some. I have enough to get by for a few days. I have fished the upper end and closer to the dam. The last couple of years I have had more success on the lower end. It's still super low. Last year I marked 55 feet through the ice. After all the time I spent out there this summer, I would be surprised if it were more than 25 feet anywhere now. At its lowest, I marked around 13 feet at the deepest spot. And I know it hasn't come up 13 feet since then. So it is gonna be interesting to see how it plays out.
See you tomorrow.
