Decided to head up to Deep Creek saturday morning with my brother and give it a shot. Got up there and got everything set up by 6:30. We were up there earlier but we took a minute walking around checking out the ice thickness. It looked to be about 4" thick where we were at on the west side by the damn. The ice was crystal clear and you could see right through it down to the bottom.

Drilled the first holes just east of the damn and fished there for about an hr or so with neither of us getting any bites. After that I headed over east of the bathroom about 25yds out. After drilling some holes there it only took me about 10 min to pull up my first fish and it was a nice 18" bow to start the ice fishing season! Its the only one I got a picture of to because both of us killed the batteries on our phones that morning using our flashlights on there.

From there on it was pretty consitstant throughout the day. I pulled about 5 more out of that hole with nothing as big as the first, before I moved back over by where I started the morning. I finished the morning there and 7 more before I decided to head out. I only had two fish that I lost getting up through the hole so I cant complain much there. Every fish was caught on the little yellow jig with two paddle tails you can see in the picture. I was tipping it with a meal worm and working it right off the bottom. It seemed like everyone I caught came from me bouncing it right on the bottom.

Don't ask me how it happened but my brother did NOT land a fish all day! After awhile I was doing all I could to put him on a fish. I even had 2 or 3 strikes that I tried throwing the pole in his hand to set it and real in but he still couldn't.

The first fish I caught held up to be the biggest catch literally until we were packing to leave. I talked my brother into staying for one more fish and It paid off because I pulled up a 24" football sized rainbow. A perfect way to end the day and we left right after that. All in all it was a great day on the ice with some nice bows to show for it.

I wish I had more pictures but I will be back up there tomorrow morning and I will make sure I take some more pictures.

Thanks for the report but I didn't get any photos. It's nice you tried to help your brother but it's better that you outfished him!

Thanks for the report. I am glad you caught the football! [Smile] There are a few in there. I noticed when scouting the place out people are throwing big Rocks onto to ice. I hope they are the ones that hit them when the snow covers the ice. With there auger. And, not any one else. My two days are up. I will be there tomorrow.

Ya there was a few rocks already froze into the ice that we tried pulling out but its to late. I really hope I don't somehow catch one of those with my auger. Thanks, hopefully tomorrow i'll be able to pull up another one and actually have some pics to show for it. I'm hoping it froze over just a little bit more so i'm not as nervous out there on the ice. Later in the day when I was there it started moaning and rumbling. What time are you heading out Idaho?

I live here in Idaho. Not to early. I have heard when the ice is making noise it is safe. Just, maybe not when it fresh ice? I hate hearing it break under me. Scary stuff !

I'll be getting on the ice just after 7 hopefully. I'll be taking along my alaskan malamute to let her get out and run around for awhile, so I wont be hard to spot. Good luck to ya though.

Do not let anyone this way mistake your dog for a wolf. They might be trigger happy. Cattle country and all. Just saying.
You never know. Better safe than sorry.

If the dog breaks through the ice it will be to thin for you to do anything to save it so be carefull.
