Fished it Sunday, we caught them on just about anything tipped with a piece of crawler. White tube or curly tail jig seemed to be the best.

What were you catching fishnets? Were you fishing the bottom?

We were fishing the first turnout past the dam we walke out maybe 75 to 100 yards from shore, excuse my ignorance, it was the first time i have ever fished chesterfield. We were in about 17 feet of water, Ice was 4 to 5 " thick.
All the fish we caught were Rainbows. Between the 3 of us we caught 70 to 80 fish, we only kept two of the biggest that measured 17 inches. The bite was steady all day long. Hope this helps and Merry Xmas

I have heard a lot about chesterfield and wanted to try it, How does the snow affect getting the the reservoir? Is it in the mountains and how about roads leading to it ? Any hazards to watch out for like springs or places to stay away from? Kinda thought about making the drive up there next weekend

The roads are general fine. Can get a little slick. As far as hazards go, not many other then the usual. And one of the inlet close to the dam can be a little thinner then rest. But given location its been more then cold enough for generally safe ice.

The Utah boys, and Idaho fellas for that matter, hit Chesterfield pretty hard. So even though the road is generally not plowed on either side of the res, it is generally packed down pretty good. Most popular place to access is on the west side where the boat launch is, but you can get down the road on the east side if you are careful.
And Jeremy is right, those chesterfield fish are always clear full of leaches and snails.

Thanks Jeremy and groundtrac I appreciate the information [cool]

Turn off of Hwy 30 onto Kelly-Toponce Rd; it is paved and usually plowed. It curves around and comes by just south of the reservoir. The road to the west side of the reservoir (Nipper/Basin Rd) isn't plowed, but as has been said it is usually packed down unless it is currently snowing and blowing. Then expect drifts! The same with the road to the east side. It isn't plowed either.
A 4 wheel drive is recommended....also a shovel and tow rope!
If the weather is too nasty, you can usually head down Hwy 34 through Grace to the Preston area lakes.
Good Luck!

I went today, the roads to the turn off were snow packed, the road to the reservoir was almost a no go in a 4X4. Fishing was slow, to say the least. I decided to keep our limit and not be to fussy, so it was three planters and a small football. They weren't hitting anything all the time, colors didn't matter.

Lava only got at the very most 1" of snow last night and its not snowing any right now. Very little wind over here also. But could be different up chesterfield. It has its own climate.

] Wind blows like a SOB up there. I tied my tent off to the wheeler on my last trip of last year. Wind blew the snow and all the other fisherpersons off the ice my last day up there last year. The ice up there will just get thicker. One of my favorite places and probably my next overnight fishing and party in Lava event !!!!
