Well, that was an ice fishing trip I'm not soon going to forget. I was bored last night and decided to go for a nite ice fish. I thought Lindon off the docks would be a good place. I got there at about 11pm and all was well until around 3 or 4 when I heard someone yelling and yammering. I left my shanty in order to hear it better and it was a guy yelling for help. I ran up to one of the RV's that was in storage up there and there was this dude laying down in his trailer with the door open, drunk or high out of his mind begging me to warm up his toes. The owner of the harbor came over at this point and he pretty much took over. I guess he was letting that guy stay in that trailer (the harbor master owns the trailer) because he was down on his luck or something along those lines. He told him to get up and go get under some blankets. That was that... or so I thought.

At about 7am I heard him bellowing again. I ignored it for the first minute or so, but I thought I heard the word "fire", so I got out of the shanty and looked over to the trailer. There was an ugly orange glow... I ran up and the dang thing was totally engulfed. I had to drag that dude out and away because he couldn't stand up or do anything himself. As I was dragging him, I noticed he had a lighter in his hand. I overheard some of the cops saying that "he wanted someone to come help him, so he set the fire to get their attention." Brilliant. So he burnt down a trailer that wasn't his, and to top it off, the fire jumped over to a sailboat that was next to it. There were a bunch of other trailers and RV's parked there too that will certainly have smoke damage. Turns out, the boat also belonged to the harbor master. Neither of them were insured. Here are some videos and pics:

*Warning* The video is graphic. Safe for work, but it's Sad to see this guy like this, and it's Sad to see what happens.

So, one of the good guys, who was going out of his way to take care of this guy who clearly couldn't take care of himself, got majorly screwed over. I can't stand this kind of thing. If you've ever used Lindon Boat Harbor, then you know it's a great place, and if you've ever had interactions with the owner or caretaker, then you know they're good people. I want and hope that we, as fisherman, BFT'ers, and just good old fashioned humans, can do what we can to put things right. I have set up a paypal donation account. There are tons of registered users here, but there are also thousands of lurkers. If everyone pitches in a few bucks, we can get this guy back on his feet, so to speak, and show him that some good deeds actually do go unpunished.

I will post everyone's name and amount of who donates (or if you'd rather stay anonymous, just let me know) so we can make sure every dollar is accounted for. I will also deliver the list to the owner (Man, I can't remember his name for the life of me) with the money.

Thanks to a_bow_nut for the $20.00 donation. Beautiful man, just beautiful.

$25.00 from a stud fisherman who wants to be anonymous.

John W. dropping $15.00 -- Thanks!

Ryan K. left $20.00 to help. Thanks my man.

Braun H. puts $20.00 on the board. Second person from Idaho to contribute. C'mon Utah, we're getting embarrassed by our little step sister!

Nathan W. from Colorado, who doesn't fish or know Mark, just sent $10.00. Thanks Nate!

Patrick M. (P K M) left $50.00 in the coffers last night. Thanks Patrick -- I promise, we're fishing Sand Hollow this year!

wagdog doin' work, son! $20.00 to the collection, thanks buddy.

Thanks to EVERYONE in advance. Remember, if we all pitch in just a few bucks, it'll make a huge impact. *mods, you should sticky this sucker*

Nice job Dave, but I can't help but think that maybe someone threw some chlorine into the gene pool for a reason [crazy]

Well Dave, good on ya for saving a life. Some people just don't get it, help a guy out and he does this... Can't fix stupid.

Crazy people in this world but good on ya, you'll have good karma come to you

That is just plain crazy. It's a good thing that you were there to help out.

One thing that I have learned in my HAZMAT training is that when propane tanks are in a fire you want to stay WAY WAY back.

Video doesn't want to work embeded.

Wow, that's a rough break for the harbor master. At least you were there to keep that wacko from killing himself.

Does that harbor guy live in that houseboat then? I always see someone hanging out over there when I pass by.

I'm not sure where he lives, to be honest.

I'm going to just edit and add to the first post instead of making tons of new posts.

Wow - that's freakin nuts! And who says fishing isn't an exciting sport?

I think someone needs to take that dude's lighter away! You're a good Samaritan there Dave. No bum about it.
But I have to wonder - if you give this "collection" to master firestarter - how do you know he'll use it to buy socks, and not another fifth, or stick it in his arm or up his nose?

I'd almost be more inclined to donate to the guy who's trailer just got toasted. But - still - it's a nice idea, good time of year to lend a hand. Hard to be a street bum in frozen lands.

So - sounds like you were pulling an all nighter?
How was the fishing????
The collection is for the harbor master and not the idiot that started the fire.

Well did you catch any fish between all the excitement?
The collection is for the harbor master and not the idiot that started the fire.
good answer.

thanks for clarifying - we'll leave the chlorine to help the rest of the pool.

Couple decades ago a homeless guy started a fire in Eaton Canyon - near my folks place in PaSadena. Well, the Santa Ana winds had ideas about sharing that fire. By some miracle, and a Smile for the powers that be - my folks house was one of the very few that survived that fire.
Wow.... give people a chance to screw you and they will [:/] Fred K.

Had to laugh when I saw the write up that KSL did.

I laughed too.

Talk about getting it wrong.

Nice hack job, KSL. If reporting news was outdoor recreation, they'd be the guys on the lake who blast gangsta' rap from their boat for all of the children to enjoy. All day.

I am getting calls and emails from other news stations wanting interviews n' junk. I'm making them a deal: figure out a way to help me generate 20k in donations, and I'm all theirs... [Wink]

Good on ya Dave. Proud to be a friend.
