I have heard from a good source that the F & G has been issuing quite a few tickets at Island Park for overlimits due to people not being able to identify the difference between a rainbow and a kokanee. From what I've heard they are very difficult to tell apart this year. The rainbows are very silvery and some people are thinking they are catching big kokanee are not. Just be careful in your identificaiton out there.

Easy way to tell the difference: stick you finger in the mouth and if it comes out bloody, it's a trout! The kokes have no sharp teeth. Mike

Kokanee have no spots on their tail or body.

Check carefully. I made this mistake last week. Just assumed from the stark silver that it was a kokanee. Fortunately, it didn't put me over the limit.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't a kokanee also have a forked tail? All the ones i have caught have had a very deep forked tail that was nowhere near similar to a rainbow trout.

Yes they have more forked tail and pointed nose. The trout this year look very close to a kokanee by color. Make sure to check heard tickets of 200.00 were being handed out for the mistake.
