I thought about going river fishing, but it was so cold I knew that my guides would be constantly frozen. So I went to Deep Creek Res to do some ice fishing. Unfortunately for me -- I managed to hit it in the afternoon and on a day that was the exception to the good fishing that has been reported. I was there for about 2 hours and I am so new to ice fishing that you can't really go by my experience, but ..... I stunk!

I caught one fish that was about 16 inches on a Prince Nymph and had one other hit that I lost.. It took my Prince and the bottom jig with him. I don't know which one that fish took. The bottom jig was a wooly bugger- -chartreuse and white with some crystal flash.

I only saw 2 or 3 fish come by on the fish finder. I tried depths from 10 ft to 25 ft, but still didn't see much in the way of fishy activity. I think the fish were all off in a corner somewhere nursing their New Year's Party hangovers.

I did talk to one other group and they were having a slow time too. They had caught some earlier, but weren't catching any since I got there.

If you plan on ice fishing it.. don't go on the days I go [laugh][laugh][blush]

Yep, I should have gone to the river.... at least then when I don't catch anything .... I know that's normal, and it's just me!! [blush] [laugh]

I admit that I didn't go earlier because it was -12 at my house this morning. I didn't even think about fishing until the sun had burnt the frost fog off and it looked so nice out.

And it turned out that it was rather nice out on the lake. I wasn't in a shelter. I never was cold, and I had my gloves off most of the time, but I wasn't there for too long. My feet did start to feel a bit cool once or twice, but once I put my "camp pad blue foam" pieces down to put them on they warmed right back up. The sun was bright, and it was really beautiful out. The air had tons of frost sparklies in it. The big kicker was that there wasn't any wind.

There was 1 couple in a shelter and at least 4 groups (including myself) that were just fishing out in the open on Deep Cr. There were 2 groups without shelters fishing on Devils, and 1 shelter and 2 other groups fishing on Hawkins. So there were a few more out there getting sunburnt too.

I should have stayed longer and seen if the bite picked back up in the afternoon.... I got to thinking about dinner instead... I am easily distracted! [laugh]

I stopped at Hawkins also for an hour and drilled some holes, but didn't see any fish go by or get a nibble. Other people were in some of the areas I would have liked to try, so I didn't stay there very long.

I think maybe I am too impatient for ice fishing. I keep wanting to move.......
