The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is currently seeking candidates with interest and experience in fisheries propagation to support the operation of fish hatcheries throughout the state. These positions play an important role in keeping Wisconsin's fish populations healthy and productive. There are current vacancies are in St. Croix (Polk Co.), Bayfield (Bayfield Co.) and Adell (Sheboygan Co.). However, the "employment register" created by this recruitment effort will be used to fill future vacancies throughout the state in the next 6-12 months. Job Duties: Direct propagation operations and operation of rearing units and outlying ponds; oversee fish health monitoring, implement bio-security practices, fish disease control, and environmental health assessments; prepare, plan and implement spawning operations; oversee egg picking, hatching, and fry transfer; keep accurate up-to-date records and prepare reports; compile all data necessary to generate hatchery production reports; audit and participate in operational planning to ensure fish production goals are met; direct and implement measures to prepare hatchery for production; sort and harvest fish for distribution; prepare and implement feeding schedules; plan and implement fish production from outlying ponds; provide information and education to the public; and schedule daily work activities and maintain associated buildings and grounds.
Special Notes:
A valid driver's license is required upon and throughout employment. A CDL - Type B license with Endorsement N and air brakes is required. A background check will be conducted prior to selection.
Normal work shift will be 7 am - 3:30 pm. Based on seasonal workload, assignments may include: Evening 2nd Shift (3 pm - 11 pm or similar hours) or Evening 3rd Shift (11 pm - 7 am or similar hours).
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
This position requires a high level of knowledge in the area of fish culture, fish rearing and husbandry techniques, fish distribution, water quality and fish health and bio-security. The ability to analyze hatchery fish production records to detect possible fish health and growth related issues and to be able to specify the quality and quantity of fish food for orders. Knowledge of water quality measurements and impacts to fish growth, health and fish disease and related fish hatchery management techniques are important. Sample collection techniques for wastewater and fish health samples are essential. This position must have strong, effective written and verbal communication skills and be able to make decision delegated by the supervisor in their absence. This position requires strong, positive interpersonal skills and a focus on customer service for both external and internal customers.<br />
