Live in Roy and work in SLC. Any luck with a sharpening service in the area? Ive used lorenz (sp?) sharpening and wasnt too impressed. I have a lazer 10" strikemaster auger.
Thanks in advance!

I picked up a litle hand held job from Sportman's warehouse the other day. Looks like one of those hand held knife sharpeners.
I had my doubts, but figured what the heck for $7.00. The thing worked great. I mean the blades aren't as sharp as brand new ones, but it sure was better.

I would like to pick one up, was it by the augers or the knives?

It was by their ice pole's and random ice fishing gear, just past their pop up tent display.

Do you recall what they charge or a close guess?

No, it has been a couple years. Give him a call.

I just called and for an 8" auger it is $10 a blade, so $20 total. Thought I would throw the info on here if anyone else was curious.

I took my blades to be sharpened where Kent suggested. What model and type of blade seems to make all the difference in the world in success of sharpening. I have a hand Strikemaster. The blades were completely unusable afterwards.
Also, keep in mind that he charges per blade. Two blades + plus didn't work = I had to buy new factory blades at Fish Tech anyway.

Save your time and money man, buy one of the hand sharpeners at sportys or cabelas, then every 5 years buy new blades, that way YOU can always toss a fresh edge on the blades and not get out stuck where it wont cut well anymore No one likes to fish in half an ICE HOLE.
Its cheaper in the long run AND you dont have to all that extra running around to sharpen blades.
NSL ken sold me a strikemaster auger the better part of a decade ago and I still have NOT put new blades on it, I bought the hand sharpening deal about 4 years ago and keep it in the ice fish bucket. I might get new blades next year, but I cut thru 9 inches of ice on 1-10-13 just fine, the blades were actually cutting a bit too much off at a time and I had to stop and back it up a bit and cut with less pressure.....and I NEVER had to lean on the thing, just use a hand on top and one to spin.
good luck

AND...don't forget to very carefully tighten the bolts that hold the blades. Take the appropriate size hex key with you at all times. You may as well buy one for use specifically with your auger.
While we're on the subject of tightening...sort of...don't forget to re-tie that one specific lure that's been catching fish for you so far today. I'm forgetful and don't realize that all the releasing I'm doing is losing tightness of my line on that lure. Take a second and re-tie that thing.[blush]
