HARRISBURG, Pa.- The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will begin lowering the water level at Children's Lake in Boiling Springs, Cumberland County, on Jan. 11, in order to control vegetation growth.
The water level will be drawn down approximately four feet to allow the vegetation to freeze, eliminating the need to cut the vegetation in late summer.
"Drawdowns are one tool used to manage aquatic plant growth and fish populations," said Area Fisheries Manager Kris Kuhn. "Aquatic plants provide very good habitat for both young and adult fish, as well as aquatic insects. However, too much vegetation can negatively impact fishing and boating opportunities and has the potential to disrupt the balance of fish populations in a lake."
The drawdown will take about two weeks to complete. The lake will be refilled beginning the first week of March. The level of the lake will be closely monitored by PFBC maintenance staff throughout the three months it is drawn down.
The lake will remain open for fishing during the drawdown period.
Children's Lake is a 6-acre Fish and Boat Commission impoundment located in historic Boiling Springs, Pa. Historic structures from the late 1800's and early 1900's, such as a gristmill, still line the lakeshore. The lake and its surrounding lands provide fishing, boating, hiking and other recreational opportunities to visitors and local residents.
