My son moved up to Idaho last year and is trying to learn some places to ice fish in the Boise area, can any of you give him some ideas of where to try, within an hour drive? He drove three hours to fish last week but was hoping to find somewhere closer. He fished the local area all summer but he said those lakes have not frozen yet. Any help would be great, thanks.

i live in meridian and i dont think there is any place in the boise area with thick ice i know arrowrock and luck peak dont freeze up to thick if at all i have fished arrowrock form the bank alot in the winter and do well catching rainbows cascade or camas is your closet bet for good ice fishing i have been thinking about checking out duff pond and seeing if the ice is thick to walk on yet it has been cold here the past few days and it is going to get really cold for like three days might have to go check out all the local ponds just for fun also the boise river can be good in the winter

Lake Lowell I believe is froze now -- have to fish near dams. Check with the refuge on rules.
CJ Strike Cottonwood and Cove areas
The ponds at Bruneau Sand Dunes are froze
The ponds in Caldwell are probably also frozen over.

Lake Lower not safe for ice fishing....... best would be casdade, horsethief, payet lake or little camas....magic res all depends how far you want to go and what you have ( snowmobile or 4wheeler)

Most years the waters around Boise do not freeze hard enough to make safe ice. I have heard of people ice fishing on Arrowrock and some of the shallower bay areas of Strike, but I've never been tempted to try it. Cascade would be the safest bet both in terms of catching fish and getting off the water alive.

The entire bruneau arm of cj has 8-10" of ice. Its plenty safe for the time being.

Thanks for all your comments guys, he does not have a snowmobile or 4wheeler and wants to ice fish the local area, so from the sounds of it, Cascade would be the best to try, unless the temp continues to freeze the lakes or ponds closer. I just fished a few of the local ponds and they had plenty of ice for the time being! All planter trout, but it's nice to just get out for a quick itch

maybe bigger perch-but lacks the numbers, I went too CJ yesterday for 5 hours and caught 50 perch and 1 crappie all over 10" most right at 11"
trout now that's a toss up, there are big trout in that lake...

I was right there with Matt yesterday and I was with Mike on Saturday. That lake is filled to the brim with fat perch and there are some monster trout in there. Y'all can have Cascade...leave CJ to me
