Hello. My friend and I are coming to daniels this weekend and I would like to know what the ice conditions are like up there and if anyone knows if it is legal to overnight fish there? any help would be great thanks

There is no restriction on night fishing , but remember . You can only use one rod , and artifical lure only . Last week the ice was 12" at Devils Creek . So am am sure it will be more than that now at Daniels , as cold as it has been this week . Curt G.

I haven't heard anything either, but like Curt said it has been COLD. There should be plenty of ice.

Just for a general reminder to all. As always, read the regulations carefully. Something that a lot of people miss is that artificial lure means nothing with any scent either, so things like Gulp lures are out.

Good luck. I hope you do well!

AND no bait, no treble and BARBLESS. I get checked all the time for the barbless thing.

The fish and game probably give out more fines there than any body of water

I have never fished there , and probably never will . Too many rules and only two fish ? Curt G.

That's two fish, if they are over 20 inches!

Yes, a lot of extra rules. It used to kick out some really good fish. Anymore you seldom catch anything over 19 inches. They seem to get harvested pretty quick. The "smaller" fish sure know how to fight though.

Usually too many people for me, but I have never seen it in the winter. Maybe there are fewer people now???

Treasureton is the same way . A treble hook is legal . But make sure barbs are pinched all the way down to avoid problems. fish and game seem to think everyone is trying to be illegal. I just hope they catch tje people who break the rules. starting to catch bass now at Treasureton also[Sad

We caught a bunch of bass in there just before it capped... it worries me. they had talked about killing it off when they first found the bass in there.

There is no size or bag limit on the bass. If you catch one take it home.

Right now the balance isn't too bad and it hasn't affected the trout size. But that will change over time if the bass over populate. Then they will just about have to poison it to recover it as a good fishery. Waste of money and heck of a problem due to some stupid bucket bio!

That is interesting because a couple years ago, I heard tell that Id. was planting bass in the Snake and other waters because they are a popular catch. I caught a nice 19" bronze back in Shelly.

oneicehole, you are saying treble at Treasureton right? Not Daniels.

Bass are great in the right places, but they will destroy the balance in a trophy trout lake. F&G are careful in how many trout they plant and have special rules there to allow the maximum grow rate for those fish. When you put a competing species in there, the food only goes so far. Bass can reproduce in the lake, and their large numbers will quickly reduce the food supply for all. F&G has electroshocked many of the bass there and moved them to other "bass" fisheries.

Treasureton is the only trophy trout fishery in the Preston area. All of the other lakes are bass and put-take. Why someone felt they need bass in the only lake that was large trout only ....who knows!

Treble hooks are legal in the trophy trout lakes unless it states "single point" hooks only. Must be barbless though.

Especially with all the lakes within 10 miles of Treasureton, I have never fished it but have had it in my sights for a couple years now. I like the fact they are trying to remiedate the problem through transplanting, rather than just poisoning it. It is small enough that might work. Have they caught any bass with some size to them? How long have they been showing up in there?

All of the ones we caught were 6-10 inches

Tuesday I was in Idaho Falls and on the Fishing Report Board in Sportsman Warehouse It said: Daniels Resevoir Ice fishing "Good, using ice flies tipped with Meal worms" I wished I had taken a photo of it but I didn't think of doing it until after I left the store. I bet fishing was good using that combo. I guess there could be another Daniels I am not aware of.

[Wink] One of my favorite places when first iced over.

You will get checked, they will look at, smell, and taste your artificial lure. Stay legal and have a great time.

The bass have been in there for a little while. I first noticed them in 2011 when I caught them on flies while looking for trout. At the end of last August I went back with some spinning gear and targeted the bass specifically. I caught about 70 in a few hours. Most were in the 6-10" range, but a few were larger. I was starting to get into more of the better size when I had to leave. I kept meaning to return, but never got around to it. They are definitely healthy, fat, little buggers.

I'm glad they are moving some of them around. They said they may move some about a mile south to that bass graveyard next door. I really hope so.

I think they will probably move a lot in there.

Might not hurt if a bunch of bass fishers got together and volunteered to help move fish. I'm not sure how that would work or when, but it might help out. I can think of a few places that could use a boost up with more bass.
