Heading to Mexico in a month. Staying in Cancun at the Sun Palace which is on that tiny strip of land between the lagoon and the ocean. It's not a fishing trip, but a relaxing getaway with the wife. I'd like to do some fishing for a morning or two while I'm down there if possible. I dropped enough coin on the flights and hotel that I don't want to hire a guide as well. So I'd like to find something I could handle on my own if possible. I figure I could fit a 4 piece 6wt fly rod with the bare essentials in my suitcase and fish the lagoon. Not targeting anything in particular. I'd just like to catch a new species or two. I wouldn't even know where to begin fishing in the ocean down there either, but haven't ruled it out as a possibility. That would cause me to rent saltwater equipment down there though, and I'm not even sure if that's a possibility. Maybe there are shops that rent equipment though--I don't know. Has anyone here been down there that has tried something like this that could point me in the right direction? Thanks!

I've done a little DIY stuff in Cabo. Great success on big chartreuse sparkle huggers. Garfish, roosters, jacks, pompano and a bunch of other stuff I have no idea what they were. Any variation in structure on the beach. Work as much of it as you can. The jacks, roosters and gar were a blast. Make sure you don't forget your polarized glasses. And watch for joggers on your back cast, in cabo they were oblivious to our back casts. Have fun and good luck!

Thanks. Did you take your own gear down there with you?

The lagoon is the ocean bro (saltwater) I did pretty well on the Bonefish in Cozumel so I would assume that they are over in the lagoon in Cancun. 6 wt. may be a bit light in the wind but it is better than not having a rod, I would just take a selection of baitfish patterns and gotcha's, should be able to catch something, and who cares what it is, it's at least fishing in the warm and sun!

Here are some flies you can have, if you want them. We can meet up or I can send them to ya, PM me.

Yes, I took my own gear. All freshwater stuff. Make certain you wash it all extremely well after every use. I just shower with mine. 6 wt is a bit light, but that is what I used at the time as well.

Just got back yesterday from a week down there at El Dorado Resorts, about 25 clicks west of Cancun. Had a ball fishing the beach shoreline. Not a fly fisherman, tho. Bought a saltwater reel a few yrs back when I took my freshwater one and, eventho I rinsed the hell out of it, still froze up once back home. Had to toss it. Bought an inexpensive 4-piece packrod, also. Caught lots of fish throwing white marabou jigs and Wild Swim shads in smallest size. Had to switch to 4" kut-tail worms on a 3/8oz jighead once bigger fish broke me off or got snagged up, thereby losing my go-to baits. Best advice I can give you: check out both high & low tide times. At low tide you'll know where bottom hazards are, plus that's when I did my best 'cuz I could walk out further & cast to deeper water. Trying right now to research what different species of fish I caught. A 3' barracuda broke me off mid-week and also took the end 2 pieces of my rod. Still caught 'em on what was left, but definitely compromised the casting.

When i went down their, I saw a few people hand line inside the lagoon i would use a shrimp imitation fly in the shallows you could hook into a huge tarpon we seen a few at the boat dock we were at inside the harbor in the lagoon side. Their is a lot of fish swiming around in the ocean no telling what you would catch. At the hotel we were at i was sitting on the beach watching two locals fishind off of the dike that ran out into the main ocean. I couldn't resist and walked out and one of them give me his pole they were using little shrimp wich i tried a few casts and had a bite on every cast but couldn't hook anything i think they were small ones but good luck sounds like fun. I did the guided boat out into the deep and caught a huge sailfish it was awsome.
