When would be a good time for me to plan a trip up there where I would have the best odds of tying into some steelhead? Ive been a few times an have yet to.catch a steelhead. Every one ive been with has gotten into them, what should I maybe try? I have been using flys on the spinning rod with corkies. And ive tried spinners. Ive never been skunked up there but never a steelhead. Hoping some one could give me some tips and pointers. I always go above rams head closer to ebineizer<--- or how. Ever you spell that.

I would give it at least another couple weeks. The weather has been real cold and the river is full of ice and jammed up in places that are normally open. If you plan on coming on a weekend I would be glad to show you some good holes around Salmon. Down river I like fishing around the Ebenezer area until dead water blows out then I'll hit the narrows. A good setup if you're gonna drift is a corky with eggs. I like to use jigs tipped with shrimp under a slip bobber too. In colder water a spoon drifted close to bottom works really well. I prefer blue, silver, or bronze.

Ditto on what steelfan said. I caught a ton of fish on eggs under a 35gram cleardrift float. You'll catch more fish using a smaller float than the guys using those giant 12" tower of power pieces of crap. The floats I use barely ride 2" above the surface and a lot of the cold water bites are similar to a crappie bite........ you cant see that on one of those big floats. Look up a yarnie making tutorial on youtube and tie some up in peach, cerise pink, and orange and drift fish them or run them on a short leader under a dink float.

I am I start tomorrow @ 8 am [cool], guess I better clarify a little better. Spring or fall run? It will not be for a few months tell I can do any of it. I guess im just trying to figure some of it out way ahead of time so I can do some shopping and be prepared when the time comes. Thank you for the offer I appreciate it. No matter how far I travel from Idaho, it will always be calling my name, yelling at me for leaving my place in the rivers.

jeremypeace,

Hook up with someone from here.(BFT) They will show you. Or, just try, try, and try. Jerk and pull on everything. When throwing lead. Floats and the drift. All have a purpose. 12 inches down to 2 inches. A bigger float you can see down the slow parts of the river. A bigger float has helped me mark some holes. Just never upset a lead man, when running a big drift.

Any time of the year is a good time to fish for steelhead. [Wink]

Pretty much unfishable around town....... River is pretty darn frozen. You might find some fishable spots below shoup but if your driving any distance I would wait until we see some warmer weather...
