I got a strike master and its about 4-6 yrs but I don't know why it takes 5-10 minutes too drill through 9" of ice. I'm not sure if its just an old model auger that why it sucks so much or its just a crappy auger in general. I just bought new blades last month. Anyone else having problem with older model of strike master??

What is the best hand ice auger that's not expensive. I might sell my old one and just get a new one.

There are a couple of things that come to mind. you could have gotten bad blades even though they were new but it might be that your auger shaft is bent. Have you tried puting some weight behind the auger as you are drilling? Some time, just pushing down as you are drilling can make it bite into the ice better.

I have too use tons of force into it too drill. I basically put he palm of my hands on the top put my elbow in an ark and put my hand on my shoulder too put more pressure and still drill slow. It's like I have too put all my weight into it too drill.

Do you have any suggest where to get a new auger and how much it might cost??

Since that is the case, the auger shaft could be replaced if you call the manufacture, I have no idea what it would cost but new power augers are $250 or so at Sportsmans warehouse. Hand augers can cost 50 to 75 dollars depending on the brand. There was a used one on the For sale board recently or you could check on KSL.

Ya I got no money for a power auger Sadly Sad. What brand of hand auger do you prefer???

I would go with one of the augers at the link above, that is a decent price and most older augers are built well. Nils is one of the best but they are very pricy.

Thanks for the info [Wink]. I might just go too sports man ware house and pick up a new eskimo auger or many be go to a few other shops too compare auger. The auger that I have now is a pain in the butt too drill with. I don't know why the auger doesn't work that well especially when I haven't used it in 4-6 years since this season. I wonder would it be because it was in a cold garage for all these years and haven't been used for a long time or what.

I just picked up a Strikemaster this fall from a member here.

Following his instructions of thowing on some new quality blades that were made in Finland? instead of China made all the difference in the world. The ice chips that come up out of the hole are as thisk as a potato chip instead of fine shavings that look like snow. It doesn't take me more than twenty seconds to blaze through the 8" of ice at Deer Creek.

If you look up these augers on the cabelas website then read the reviews they almost all say the same thing. "The china made blades are worthless."

So see if you can see where it says what country your blades are made in and maybe look into some different ones.

Years ago I also learned the hard way about letting my auger hit the ice when I was getting ready to drill. Now I set it down so softly that you don't evben hear it hit the ice. Just the smallest imperfection on the cutting edge can make for some tough drilling.

Ya the blades were made from Sweden and it's still hard too drill a hole. When I went to dc a few weeks ago. It still took quite some time too drill. Looks like I just got too buy a new auger because I don't want too be drilling a hole for 5+ minutes.

Try loosening the blades just enough to slip a piece of paper under one side of the blade so that the blade tips slightly steeper into the ice and try that. You might want to take your wrenches onto the ice with you so you can play with adjusting the blades with paper shims. Too steep an angle and it'll work you to death turning it and too flat, it won't cut. One thing, the blades gotta be SHARP.

Ya I will try that out and see if it works better if its a little loose. I think I tight it too the point you cant tight it any more and don't know if that affects how it cuts the ice or so what.
