Howdy!
I am finally back from California and have been up to the berry a couple times so far with pretty good success between 20-40 feet using marabou jigs and gizzy bugs fished just off the bottom with worm. I'm taking a couple of my scouts up to ice fish hoping to finish off their fishing merit badge with some new species and hopefully some bige fish. we are heading out tonight but i'm having a hard time deciding between fish lake and the gorge... Anyone know which is better right now and what is working? One has been dying to catch a lake trout and I'm still a greenhorn when it comes to both of these lakes so any tips to help put us on the fish would be great!

I hope this isn't too late for your decision. I would go to the Gorge. I was at Fish lake last Saturday and didn't do too well, it was the slowest I've ever seen there and not just with my group.

The Gorge is producing some pretty hot pup fishing--at least from what I hear. Good luck!

I think you really need to ask yourself what the intent of the trip is.

If I recall correctly, earning your fishing merit badge requires that you catch and identify multiple species of fish. This, by itself, would lead me to think Fish Lake would be the best choice.

Further, if it is scouts you are taking, then their attention span will be very short. Move them in to the weed-line, and have them use meal worms, and they'll be entertained for hours on end with opportunities at multiple species.

If large lake trout are your single goal for the outing, then I think Flaming Gorge would be the best bet.

Good luck. Drive safe.
