Just a few sample thread wraps I've been trying out while waiting for my new blank to come in. This and tying flies is pretty much all I do in my spare time while all the waters are frozen over near Iceberg... I mean Rexburg...

Cool!!!!!
Is this a fly rod you are wrapping? You don't typically see fancy wrapping on them. Feathers yes[Smile]

Ya it is a fly rod.. I haven't decided on the thread colors yet but the blank is a nice blue color. I will also be inlaying some feathers on the rod somewhere.

Nice work! I would love to see it when you get your blank done.

Most definitely will post some pics when its done. I'm working on a rod for my father in law as well that I'll have to post as well.. anyone else out there a rod builder?

In my younger days I built rods to earn fishing money while in college (1954 grad). For about 25 years I made custom rods here in Idaho. Today I only build a rod now and then for myself. Here's a few of my wraps:

I don't do this type of stuff anymore. My eyes and patience are too old.

I havent been doing for a long time and still in the process of getting set up as a company. Right now I am doing it at cost for friends and family to build up more experience and some sample pics of what ive done.

I've built one fly rod and enjoyed it a lot. I just have a little trouble getting myself up to doing it again d/t lack of the stand, initial cost etc and that I'm approaching 20 different rods now. Maybe some day I'll look into it more seriously again. Love the patterns that you guys have done. Much better than my single color thread wraps.

I've built my stand and rod dryer for about 20 dollars. Someday ill have a nice stand with a motor and such but for now I just use a hand wrapper.. those wraps in the picture are some of the first wraps I've done that weren't just a plain two tone wrap

here is a sample of the thread wraps my father in law decided he wanted to go with on the rod im building for him. it is about 1/2 done without any epoxy on it so far and havent done any of the butt wrap just yet.. thinking about in laying some feathers on the butt wrap too but havent decided that yet

I like the Variegated thread. Have you done a color test to see what happens with or without color preserver?

I havent but i have done one rod without alreadt so i went ahead and put color preserver on it this time.. now im just waiting on the winding check I forgot to order so i can do the butt wraps and such

Nice choice of colors. Do you use a burnishing tool to smooth?
[signature]
thanks, i do use a burnishing tool.. ive noticed that the metallic tread is a bit harder to work with at times.. these are not finished yet and need some work with the burnishing tool still.
