St. Andrews... The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) has selected Richard (Rick) J. Warren of Bangor ME as the 2012 recipient of the Lee Wulff Atlantic Salmon Conservation Award. Senator Michael Meighen, Chairman of ASF (Canada), presented the award on November 13 at a dinner, held in conjunction with meetings of the Board of Directors in New York City.
"Rick is ASF's first U.S. Chairman from Maine, which is particularly fitting," said Mr. Meighen, "considering the significant role we have played in restoring Maine's Penobscot River. He continued, "For the past five years, Rick has worked with ASF partners in his role as co-chair of the project's private capital campaign that has raised more than $25 million to buy and remove three dams." The Nature Conservancy also provided staffing and leadership to the private campaign and were joined in the effort by the Natural Resources Council of Maine and Trout Unlimited.
"When dam removal is complete, wild Atlantic salmon and 10 other species of sea-run fish will have renewed access to 1000 miles of habitat in streams throughout the watershed that have been blocked by dams for close to two centuries," continued Senator Meighen.
This year, the Great Works dam was decommissioned and removed from the Penobscot River. The massive Veazie Dam at the head of tide is slated for removal next year.
Mr. Warren provided outstanding leadership and guidance during his seven-year term as Co-chairman of ASF's Board of Directors. He has been a Director of ASF for 22 years. He has been instrumental in raising the profile of wild Atlantic salmon and the issues facing their survival in both the United States and Canada. In 2005, the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick honored Mr. Warren with an award recognizing his long-time work to conserve wild Atlantic salmon in the province.
At the annual meeting in New York on November 15, Mr. Warren will retire from his duties as Chairman. Mr. Meighen concluded, "It has been a privilege to share the Chairmanship of ASF's Board with Rick, whose enthusiasm for conservation of the species is exemplary."
Mr. Warren is editor and publisher of the Bangor Daily News, president and director of the Bangor Publishing Company, director of the Northeast Publishing Company out of Presque Isle, a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and the Maine Daily Newspaper Publishers' Association.
Active in community affairs, Rick has served on many boards, including The Forest Society of Maine and Land for Maine's Future. He currently serves on the Roosevelt Campobello Park Commission, and is a member of several angling clubs, including the Anglers' Club of New York.
The Lee Wulff Award is presented annually in his memory. Lee Wulff was an angler, artist, author, and filmmaker, who dedicated 60 years of his life to conserving wild Atlantic salmon and advocating catch and release angling to help safeguard their future.
