Am I wrong or ok? Did I see that they are closing the park and access below the dam?

They have closed the walkway on top of the dam spillway. I haven't heard anything about the park immediately below the dam, but they have been building a camping and RV area next to the road and away from the dam. Since one of the reasons they gave for closing the walkway was facility security and that park is so close to the dam and generator building, I wouldn't be surprised if they close the park as well.

"facility security "
Interesting... 10+ years after other areas closed access to dams, we're now jumping on that bandwagon..? Kind of late to the dance if you ask me, but "safety first" right...

Weird.

My buddy read somthing about them closing below the dam. I could not find it. If they close that below, thats not cool. i camp there sometimes. It is nice with grass and shade. They have also put some money into those camping spots over the last couple years.
That will shut down half the sturgeon spots too. that place was sooo crowded before. now we will have twice the fishermen in half the spots.

It was always a little cooler camping spot than anywhere else in the heat of the summer.

I rarely use the area, usually fish strike by boat but this is what I find annoying. All of the improvements were just made because the lease on the dam was up for renewal. We all seen how it has been cleaned up and improved, paving the majority of strike dam road, even the Idaho Power stocked and tagged trout I used to catch every trip.
Now that they have a lease secured again they are kicking the public out. Sure you can use security as an excuse and people will buy it, but when is the last time you heard of a failing earthen dam that didn't fail while being filled the first time. Destroying an earth dam is nearly impossible, not having people by the dam won't prevent anything, having extra eyes would probably be beneficial. A boat full of explosive would be more effective anyways, a surface explosion would just deflect outwards and away. Strategically strike is a low reward for a terrorist group, they'd ruin some farmland and small towns but the snake canyon could handle it all. One last thing, if you are intent on destroying it would a closed area stop you?

C.J. Strike is located on the Snake River southwest of Mountain Home, ID. This area includes four developed fee campgrounds owned and maintained by Idaho Power. All parks have restroom facilities or vault toilets; most have potable water. No electricity. Numerous boat launches provide access to the north and south sides of the reservoir. There is a 14-day stay limit at all parks and on all Company land with no reservations. ACCESS TO THE SPILLWAY is closed indefinitely for public safety concerns. We apologize for any inconvenience, however, safety and facility security is our priority.

Fellas that's not sturgeon fishing, that's a redneck beer drinking recreation area, you wanna go sturgeon fishing send me a pm. My only complaint with the place is fish carcasses in the dumpster, it makes the place stink. Everyone needs to throw them in the river to feed the fish, Idaho Power has killed the food source for the Great White of the Snake. They are starving!

Can a guy launch a small boat below the dam like at the bridge? Ron

There is a boat ramp there down stream of the bridge. I use that term very loosly because its more like a 2 track going down into the river at times. It can also only be used during high water. Unless you can physicaly pick your boat up and move it around by hand I dont suggest it. At low water there is a gravel bar at the bottom. The launch in Grandview is much more reliable.

I would be launching a inflatable pontoon. Ron

Ron,

I have launched my pontoon there trying to catch my first sturgeon 3X. had no issues except i did not get a bite. i did catch a few trout with my other pole but still a sturgeon virgin!

Maybe we need to hook up. Ron

I would do it. I just don't want to bring ur game down. I am such a rookie. Mine is already registered for this year.[cool]

There is a dirt path going down to the water right next to the bridge on the side closest to the generator building. I have seen people standing down there fishing near the bridge pilings. There's some slack water out of the current when the flows are normal, so I bet you could park your car in the gravel area near the bridge and launch your pontoon there.

Mine is registered and ready to go [Wink]

I was at CJ yesterday and got some clarification on whats closing...the only thing that is being closed is the dam itself...they said people used to have access to the whole thing...fishing was permitted on the cj side all the way down it...the park by the spillway is still open...you can fish anywhere you want as long as you don't climb up any dam structures...so the concrete walls of the spillway are off limits but anything below it is fair game....BTW...I didn't see one fleck of ice on the lake anywhere...not even in the narrows...clear as a bell....

My uncle was there yesterday and I think they fished in the cotton wood area. The ice was about gone they fished open water. Thanks for the info. Ron
