Three of us made our way to Yuba today. Expected wind and lots of snow. Got a little of each but not bad at all. The worst part was driving home from Randy's House on 90th south to the Bountiful area. There must have been close to 25 cars wrecked on the freeway. Back to catching. Two of us caught our first northern pike -- so we got them off of our bucket list. Largest went 25 inches and we were fortunate to catch 11 of them. Kory even managed to catch two perch!

How big were the perch?

Kudo there Kent. Nice job on finding the toothy buggers. Do you add steel leaders or anything to help pull 'em through the holes?
Still hoping to notch off an iced Tiger. Wish there were Pike waters closer to the north. I need to do some more research - maybe see how far into Idaho I'd find 'em.
[cool][#0000FF]Nice work...for a trio of rookies.

Yeah we used steel leaders mainly. I caught one without a leader but it likely nicked my line and while it was in the hole it snapped the line but I was able to grab it. I also used 40 pound fluorocarbon.

The perch were 10-11 inches and full of eggs. So there are some in there but they are sparse.

Like Kent, I also caught my very first Northern Pike on this trip.
I have been keeping a ledger of all my fishing trips, species, counts, conditions, etc. for many years now and it was fun to add a new lifetime species to my ledger. It was also good to catch more than one, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke!
It was a fun trip with great company as usual. I was prepared to fish outside on this trip as my understanding is that it pays to move from hole to hole when hunting for these fish, but I got cold and wimped out midmorning and set up my shack and fished two holes from inside my shack the whole rest of the day...and ended up catching just as many as Kent and Kory! Pure beginners luck. I even caught one using another members "patended sleeping technique".
I have a few pictures to post that I'll put up a little later.

Yes it is! I saw you using it effectively at Flaming Gorge, so I figured I'd try it and it worked! Though I may invest in a small bell of some sort to clip on to the rod. The sound of the rod thumping on the ice barely woke me up.
My cousin Arron also uses that patended sleeping technique with much success.
And thanks again for your advice, it really helped out on the trip!

Ha ha Randy I love the (patented sleeping technique) it produces fish. Strong work on the pikes !

Dude, how do you do it, you are always catching the most and biggest[cool]. I'd like to see who does the best between you and Ira(wiperslayer), you both kill them no matter where you go. Congrats to you and Kent on your first pike.

Hey Arron, I hear you are a rockstar when it comes to the sleeping technique. Also heard you took top honors on your last trip with Randy.
Hope to see you out there sometime soon.
Randy, had an elk steak tonight and it was great, thanks.

...you are making me blush...[blush] I think you've got me
with Kent or Kory. However, here is MY secret:
1. Focus on staying warm and sleeping
rather than actually trying to catch fish.
2. Go with Kent, who did tons of research, brought the right lures and talked with others who also gave him some tips and pointers and knew exactly where to go.
3. It's good to be lucky.[
