Baudette, MN A group of stakeholders from the Lake of the Woods area have come together to create a campaign to preserve The Walleye Capital of the World for years to come. Keep It Clean is an organization which was created to promote a clean Lake of the Woods and to bring together a variety of stakeholders to do so.
The group is made up of representatives from the Soil and Water Conservation District, Tourism, Lake of the Woods County, MN DNR Fisheries, MN DNR Enforcement and Friends of Zippel Bay State Park.
This past Spring, Friends of Zippel Bay State Park hauled off huge trailers full of garbage and debris that washed up on the shore from the ice fishing season. This spurred discussions about the topic and a group of stakeholders within our county came together and created a campaign to educate, remind and inform visitors to Lake of the Woods to "Keep It Clean".
Keep It Clean was created to protect, maintain and promote cleanliness for the beautiful landscape, water resources and shorelines of Lake of the Woods as a special place for everyone to visit and enjoy.
In addition to education, enforcement and awareness, dumpsters have been placed at strategic access points along the south shore. These dumpsters have been purchased by Lake of the Woods County. The costs of garbage disposal are being offset by a grant from the MN Pollution Control Agency and from participating resorts with access points to the ice.
Locations of dumpsters...
1. Wheeler's Point Public Access adjacent to Adrian's Resort Ice Road Access (2 dumpsters)
2. Cyrus Resort - 1 dumpster<br />
3. Zippel Bay Resort - 1 dumpster
Signage is in place with the Keep it Clean logo so visitors know they can dump their garbage there.<br />
Ink stamps with the Keep It Clean logo are being used to stamp resort ice road passes.
"The community has really come together in a proactive manner to address the garbage produced from the popularity or our ice fishing season. We feel this combination of education, awareness, enforcement and making it easy for visitors to dispose of trash will have huge benefits to our natural resources" explains Joe Henry, Executive Director of Tourism at Lake of the Woods.
