I know this question is a bit earily but,
when does the ice usually start coming off Strawberry and/or Starvation? Any projections for this year?

My grandfather always used to talk about "the crows feet" near Little Cottonwood Canyon. The snowline in the crows feet would have to retreat above a certain point, before he knew when the runoff was over, as well as when higher lakes were free of ice.
I have watched them each year since I was a kid, but I don't know what the marker is for the ice off indication. I can tell you when the runoff has peaked and is over based on looking at them however.
Has anyone else here ever heard of these too?

its funny you mention that. there is a small peak here heading into the weber canyon from ogden i always look at and use as my timing clock for fall and spring. if (by visual inspection) there is about 20 feet of snow to the top of the little peak, ice off is happening, during the fall, if it is about 15 feet from the top down, the browns are spawning. heading into the canyon on 84 it would be the smallest peak on the left right above the 89 exit

We do the same thing with the horses head on Timp. in the spring in Heber.
As soon as the neck is well defined that marks the end of the high water season for us.

I was told there is a similar snow line on the Wellsville Mountains up here in Cache that tells you when the bass fishing should be picking up. I wish that time was right now.

Fished Soldier Creek by boat in mid April last year and the Strawberry side was breaking up, we have some warm weather coming the next few weeks so I am hoping it starts going soon.

Oh, the Crow's Feet! Didn't know anyone still remembered them as a landmark. I know right where you mean, but dont really know how to use them. However, above the Crow's Feet in a certain snow-field there is a clump of rocks right in the middle that I watch to appear every year that is a pretty good indicator of Uinta ice-off at certain lakes.
Gotta feelin' ice-off is gonna be about three weeks late this year. Well worth the wait for plenty of water in those alpine lakes!

Know a few Bonners but I'm not so great with names. Do better with faces.
