I was actually just about to post a report for The Blacksmith. I didn't fish the little reservoir, but I did see quite a few fish sipping midges as I drove past. I'll just make this my report and keep it short. I broke out the 3wt and fished a dry/dropper most of the day as I prefer it to using an indicator in the shallow pocket water that is so abundant there. I did use an indicator a couple of times on some longer, deep runs though. Standard nymphs should work fine. I was using one I made up that is sort of a hare's ear/prince/pheasant tail hybrid. Just make sure you are using tungsten to get them down fast. There are a lot of tricky currents in that stream and the tungsten helps get your fly down better. I caught 21 small browns, [inline "brown 2 small.jpg"]

4 whitefish,

[inline "whitefish 3 small.jpg"]
3 small cutthroat, and to my surprise, a feisty little cuttbow that jumped numerous times.

I'd never caught one there before, but it had an orange slash (though fainter than on a straight cutt), and it sure looked and acted rainbowish.
Most of the fish took the dropper, but quite a few munched the big attractor, much to my surprise. More of them refused it than ate it of course, but that was to be expected this early in the season. I did see some midges coming off (though no fish rising to them). I probably should have broken out some tiny midge dries, but I hadn't brought my 6x and just wasn't much in the mood for that anyway.
It wasn't the most incredible trip ever, but it was a gorgeous day, and those little buggers were still fun on a 3wt (especially the whitefish).

Thanks, those are both fun little streams to fish. They don't have as large of fish overall as places like the Weber or Provo, but they're peaceful and beautiful places to fish.
I'll be honest, I have a little soft spot in my heart for those ugly whitefish. Maybe it's because they're typically larger than the trout in the Blacksmith, maybe it's their activity in colder weather, but even though they're homely, I have a ball catching them. I was actually kind of hoping to find a pod of them when I decided to fish The Blacksmith.

Thank you for the report. Have you or anyone fished on the reservoir? if so what is it like and how do you fish it? thanks

I fished it briefly once in the fall using small leeches and caught some small rainbows. This time I see a lot of fish rising, so I would probably fish a long leader with 6x tippet and a small midge pupa or adult pattern in the surface film. That should do the trick.

That's a beautiful little cutbow, I have caught a few of them fishing below the dam back in the day. I to like the Blacksmith fork, its beautiful water and it's not too big. it also can be really good this time of year.
