Hi,
im new to nevada. been fishing bay area delta for years but i havent had much luck in lake mead.
I went shoreline at hole33, and got nothing. maybe something wrong with my bait (i used chovies)
then went on my tiny inflatable boat at boulder harbor. with ZERO luck.
literally, fish were jumping everywhere, yet nothing's biting! i used crankbaits, swimbaits, spinners, etc. nothing's hooking!
btw, what were those jumping fish? carps? bass? [crazy]
so any tips would help.
- at this time of year, should i go down deep for stripers? like 50-100 feet?
- what time do bass bite at rocky edges?
- should i go down deep? or stay at the cove?
- what lures do you use for trolling? and where do you troll?
- lastly, i set up my boat at boulder harbor (that's the only one i know), going back to govt wash/33 hole cove is too far away for a trolling motor
-- are there any other coves/spots with good fishing?
i dont have fish finder here... so... yeah.. sucks.
help!
Ps.
any links to precious resources are welcome. thanks in advance!

[cool]Welcome to the board. Those fish jumping were probably gizzard shad. There are alot in the lake. You can launch your inflatable boat at Government Wash. Lots of guys launch kayaks, paddle boards, floattubes, and jetskis from there.
The fishing should start to pick up soon with the large and smallmouth bass beginning to spawn. The threadfin shad will be spawning soon as well. Stripers will follow them into shore and later begin slurping the fry. Some of the bass guys can better tell you ways to target them now. Good luck out there.

i knew it! i thought they looked like shad. so... how do you get em? [:p]

This will be the second to last time I give away the free info. JK the Striper club is here to educate anyone who ask.
So newbie, you tried just a few time and it didn't work out. It took me a year of trying every weekend and I only got 2 fish. Then I found this site and that lead me to the NSC.
You can read all the post from years past and see it changes alot. But on this stays constant KISS.
Keep it simple and fish a lot or stay on the forums and read the post.
Simple.......use lighter line 10 pound or less.
Cut the heads and tails off and use as chum.
Get a chunk of bait about a 3rd of the anchovy or sardine.
Place on a lightly weighted line and a #2 hook. 1/8 ounce jig heads work well also.
Cast out in an area that you think is deep, like a place where you can't see the bottom. As the baited line sinks the stripers will find the bait, the light weight line and small presentation will fall slowly. Weight for the bait to fall, after 5 mins cast again.
Don't forget to chum, cut up small pieces of bait and cans of corn. One bag of cut anchovies is not a lot try two bags to start. This should attract stripers in the area in less than an hour (if they are hungry and nearby)
Last thing for now, get some spray attractant, BANG or salty shad from Bass Pro. The cut bait will lose its scent in about 15 minutes. Spray and re-bait often.

thank you iamthsmf!
and yes, we should get a sticky for newbies [
]
oh, one last, last Q,
does chumming have to be anchovies? can it be a different fish?
i see other cheaper fish on the market, will it work? thanks in advance!

You can chum with almost anything but
DO NOT USE GAME FISH AS CHUM.
This means do not cut up a fish that has a daily limit.
No Trout, cat fish Blue Gill, LM & SM bass or Stripers. Not even the guts of these fish, don't use them for crawfish either.
Weird fish from the market are ok for chum.

I have always wondered about that.
I used to buy mackerel from the grocery store to use as catfish bait (by the way, it's a killer catfish bait if you can figure out how to keep it on the hook). I always wondered if I was breaking the law because it wasn't written into the rule-books

sorry to resuscitate the thread, but, additional Q [laugh]
there's no limit on LMBs right? i read the regulations, and I couldnt find the limit on large mouths.

from the ndow website
LAKE MEAD
Season is open year round, any hour of the day or night, except in areas as posted. Limits are 5 trout, 6 black bass, 25 catfish, and 15 crappie. There is no limit on striped bass less than 20 inches total length. Limit on striped bass 20 inches total length or longer is 20. No limit restriction on other game fish.
