Just saw this in the paper today.
Utah Daily Harold 4-1-2013
The Biologic Diversity Center and the USFWS made a joint announcement this morning that the Utah chub (Gila atraria) has been newly listed as 'threatened" by the ESA. B.D Hart from the BDE explains. "The Utah chub is an endemic species to the Bonneville basin and is found nowhere else in the world. Just as the Humpback chub and the bonytail chubs are threatened in Utah, so is the Utah chub. The species is in grave peril to become extinct, thanks to the introduction of aggressive non-native species as yellow perch, walleye, white bass, smallmouth bass and the Bear Lake cutthroat trout." Additionally, Mr. Hart asserts, the efforts by misguided fish and game agencies in the Intermountian West to limit Utah chub numbers are "deplorable" and show no respect for a valued native member of the biotic community. He declared this a great victory for his organization.
According to the USFWS, fishing for Utah chubs is still permitted, however, any Utah chub caught must be immediately released and a report submitted to the local DWR branch.
The Utah DWR had no officail comment at this time, but unofficially stated that this decision would likely affect the management plans of such notable Utah fisheries as Strawberry, Scofield, Jordanelle, Otter Creek and Minersville. According to an unidentified DWR official, they were blindsided by this action and will need to study it carefully, and said some emergency regulation changes may occur in the next few months.
