I took a few hours this afternoon to swing by Porcupine in order to check the water conditions. The ice is completely thawed, and while the reservoir isn't at maximum capacity, the waterline has definitely risen since Fall. The roads around the reservoir are clear, and the boat launch appears to be in working order; however, I wouldn't recommend launching any heavier boats until the water comes up a bit.

Sorry no temps measured, as time did not allow for a tube/canoe outing. I did bring a friend though, and we caught a few browns throwing spinners from shore, one of which taped close to 17".

Shouldn't be too much longer for the Koke heads out there....

I need to learn how to catch a koke and then go do it.[cool]

Nice! I've been hoping someone would post about the pig soon. Looks like the water level has risen a good 10 feet or more since I was there a few weeks ago. Where were you throwing spinners at? Near the inlet? Is the water muddy?

Porcupine is good place to learn, being considerably smaller than other options. I am a novice as well, but the Pig has not let me down yet. The only issue is they have all been pretty small. I have had my best luck towards the inlet, I know they run up and down the main channel to the dam, but I have had the best luck as it narrows into the inlet. We didn't alter much from the trolling rigs for trout. Flasher rig with a squid, or even bare hook tipped with a gulp corn, or a small piece of crawler. Use the finder to determine depth.

Hey Carl,
Great report, I really appreciate you letting us know the answers to most of our questions all at one time.. Thank you... J

Hey I think UtXplr gave you some great advice, other than sometimes the inlet has let me down so don't fear trying down in the main body of the reservoir... Let me know when ya want to try it and if I can make it, I'd like to try my new toon mod up there... This time of year the Kokes are usually shallower so you don't need the down rigger as much but later on you have to chase them down deeper... I like the gulp maggots as a tipper on my squids.. Good luck and don't be disappointed in the size... Later J

Thanks! I will have to check the calendar, mamatrouts calendar, and mother natures calendar. Then I will be able to hit the pig for some kokes.

I went up yesterday (13th) and tried the toon mods. I like the toon but the weather and fishing didn't treat me very well. The main body of Kokes were down between 40 to 60 feet and my homemade down rigger didn't have enough weight to get me down that far so I got skunked. I had 3 hits in the 30 ft deep area but there were very few fish there on the graph. Wind came up and blew me off the pond about 9:30 but it wasn't going well in prime time so I doubt I'd caught any unless I tried jigging them so I could get to where they were. Water was clear with floaters like trees but it was fine for fishing. One other boat out but I didn't see if they got into the fish or not. They were all over the pond so I don't think they found a hot spot. Later J

Jeff - you SO kill me! Always talking up SO much to do, never time to get out, yet in flash-back, you been there, done that!

You're quite the adventurer!

I need to do some shore wandering and see what kind of fossils I might find. Do hear tales, and the ol Bonneville shoreline beckons. Maybe before the water comes up...

I'd love to drag the riggers out and give 'em another go. That's a great lake for it. Hyrum is sounding pretty hot too.

First trip out - electric didn't want to run.. Need to trace my wiring. Battery - good, but no go. At least the gas fired well (GO Gertrude!!). Trailer wiring needs some love too me thinks. Shoot!!!
If it's not one thing it's another!!!

Wanna rig up a puppy platform this year too, see about bring the hound out - she'll probably spend all her time barking at birds......

If you're gonna hit the PIG- love to know, maybe I can run a tag-team effort.
Well it's like this my fields are still too wet to farm, and if I get up early I can sneak a half day fishen in before the boss misses me. Plus I remember what happened last summer after the farming starts I don't get out much so I try to get my fill in when I can because I know it won't last.

If you're after fossils I know a spot up Millville canyon that is crazy loaded with them. Let me know I'll show ya on a map.

Next time I get ready for a pig trip I'll give ya a call. Next time I'll take the boat so I can get the real riggers down where the fish are. The launches were okay for big boats other than the wash boards and steepness, but if you're careful I think it would be okay. I don't know if I can get the fish to bite though. I've had slim Pickens for the last month. So you heard so luck at Hyrum? That sounds good, it's a much easier spot to fish. Hey you must have a good lens on that camera I thought I was far enough away to be out of range. I like that wind sock net that kind of shows what fishing was like that night. Well have a good week and get some good weather on the way. Later J
