It wasn't a very good fishing trip to me. I found a couple new spots and on a day I have more time I'll have to go look a little farther...I saw some1 and I must have found his spot cause I could see him and he tryed to hide so I wouldn't see him lol. Anyway, at that spot, I broke a pole [mad]. I'm guessing it was just wear and tear cause I didn't do anything to it. I got snagged and it was snagged really good but was also repeatedly pulling down and fast, not like normal snags(fish on?). Anyway I was about to break the like and the stupid top half literally snapped and fell it the water and flowed down stream so I didn't even get a chance to try to repair it

.
Slightly after that I found what I think will be a really good spot if I try it longer and not at a crappy time of day. Ended up missing a few bites and landed one 15 inch sucker. After that I ventured down farther and tryed a few spots that looked killer but there definetely wasn't anything hungry in there. Shortly after that I was walking along the River when I heard a noise. So I look over and there is a pretty big turtle...it was oval shaped, about 2 feet long and probably 13 or 14 inches wide. Anyway, He jumped off the hill he was on into the water. I've seen a few turtles along the Jordan river but none were out of the water or even close to as big as this 1.
Then I decided to hit my money hole for suckers. I literally threw it in and Fish on! It was probably the prettiest sucker I've caught. You can't really tell but it was actually pretty orange. The only weird thing about him was he was these bump things all over his fins. Was hoping you guys could tell me what that is. Unfortunately he was the only one I caught at my money hole

. I don't know for sure but at my money hole on the opposite bank, I believe there was another turtle. Something really big jumped from a cliff that was like 5 feet above the water.
Other than that I saw 5 deer, and possible a elk or moose...it was really dark but I was within 20 feet of a female deer, elk or moose. If this was a deer, it was the biggest one I've ever seen. I really think it was a moose based on its body shape. Here's the picture of the pretty sucker I caught and also it's fin. You guys know whats up with it? sorry not the best quality :/

Any idea what kind of turtles you see down there? Specie? Amazing the wildlife you find in the city with just a little cover or openness. I bet that whole place is lousy with critters at night, like coyotes and raccoons, etc.

I'm not saying you didn't see a moose, but if you were 20 ft from one and didn't get charged then you're luckier than some other people who got that close.... especially when they could potentially have offspring close by. Those things can be mean as hell!
Good job on the fish! I caught an ok channel cat and a pretty fat carp down there this evening.

I have no clue what type it is, contrary to the label slow as a tortuise, this was anything but slow...This happened within like 2 seconds. First I came around the corner then I hear something then See something flying in the air. At first it took my brain a minute to process it and I was thinking what on earth was a fish doing out of the water?
I've never seen anything at night when I've been out but I've seen more wild life in this area of the JOrdan river than anywhere. I think there's 4 female deer that are best friends and always together in the same area. If I really saw a moose or elk that's a first. Oh and I haven't seen any yet but in the past I've seen frogs and snakes, frogs out at night especially.

Yeah I was almost in self disbelief too but it seriously looked HUGE for a deer. It looked to me like 400-500 Lbs and it was in the exact type of stuff Moose are always in in the mountains. What'd you use to get your Channel Cat? I was debating about trying today but I wanted to save my Sucker bait that I have left for saturday cause it's supposed to be 70 degrees.
I'm in the biggest Channel Cat slump. I used to freakin slay them with a worm. Then I got all techno using Sucker, Carp, etc and have been in a drought ever since :/. Think I have my perfect nighttime spot scouted out though so hopefully I get a good 1.
I forgot to mention that I kept on not getting some type of fish and it was really pissing me off. I either was getting the dinkiest bites from something big with sharp teeth or just getting bites from something small with sharp teeth. I'd see little taps and every time I'd reel in to check the worm, it'd have a straight cut line, it wasn't really torn like a finicky sucker or carp would do it.
Oh and for the record, I would be toast if what ever it was charged me...I was butt cold because I only brought shorts and a t-shirt and was still wet from walking in the water earlier. I also had a really heavy bag cause it had waters and some food I brought. On top of that, I have a bad back and it was achy as heck. That was a horrible walk back!

[cool][#0000FF]The fish is a Utah Sucker in spawning mode. They color up a bit and get those fin bumps.
The creature you saw was the elusive Wasatchquatch.

Sounds like you got into those piraƱa nipping your line clean off like that. I hate it when they flush them and the end up in your fishing hole. Better be careful wading down there they might start on you. Wink

Yep it indeed was. It was pretty big like I said and one other thing that wasn't like a Deer was that it's eyes were glowin even tho it was dark. I'm positive the thing wasn't a deer. This area seriously had the best wild life...I have even seen a bob cat there once. That's cool about the sucker being a spawner. I was gonna say I suspect it was full of eggs by it's shape/feel but I let it go so I didn't find out.

I have seen western painted turtles along the lower Provo as well as in southern Idaho near The Bear River. That would be my guess. Sunning and then quickly plopping into the water like that is pretty typical behavior.

sweet seein a turtle there, i fish it 4 times a week and i have yet to see one but have heard many a times about some.
Also i see tons of deer down in certain areas of the river but never a moose, if it was a moose thats pretty cool man, you sure it wasnt a cow{livestock}[:p].
Just waitin for the river to warm here in the next few weeks

[quote Springbuck]Any idea what kind of turtles you see down there? [/quote]
Nonnative species. Often released pets that get too big, like snappers. Several snapping turtles have been hauled out of there.
[signature]
Yeah is definately wasn't a cow lol...there's no farms near by. I don't want to reveal where exactly I was but 3/5 turtles I've seen have been at 5400S. ish. This one wasn't even close to there. I want it to warm up to so the Cats will bight better and so I won't be freezing when the sun goes down lol.
[signature]
Yeah this was the first one I saw sunning. All of the other ones I've seen were swimming, and surfaced near the bank for a minute. I guess they're all over but I've seen a few near the Jordan river at 5400 S...not sure y but that seems like a hot spot. I'm just glad it wasn't in the water where I was. I was walking in about waist deep water and probably would have crapped my pants if I felt something touch me underwater lol. I'm not sure if it'd bite or not but it looked pretty scary, and considering it plopped into the water and I would have had to have climbed down a 10 foot cliff to get to it, I'm pretty sure it was really wild.
[signature]
Yeah if people want them out then good luck with that. I don't think it would ever be possible to ever get one out of there because the Jordan is murky, has zillions of hiding spots and its probably too deep where they hide.

I have a random quest for you guys. If the water in the area is mud brownish does that mean there's carp or something swimming near by? At one point I was fishing where a water source that connects with the Jordan River and the water was really clean where the water was coming in from, it was probably 3 or 4 feet deep and I could see lots of rocks on the bottom. But around the area where the normal river was running and it met up, it looked turned up quite often. I did have 1 bite but never caught or saw as many as I should have for how it looked. Certain spots I've fished I know there's a fish near by if the water suddenly gets cloudy but I didn't know if this was just because the water source and the jordan river connecting or if it was fish.

Ah the Jordan River. I fished it last weekend (Sunday) and spotted a turtle in the water near the area I like to fish (wonder if it's the same turtle I caught there last summer?). Then on Monday night while walking down the parkway, my girlfriend and I spotted a large beaver. We stopped and watched him chew on some young sapling branches, then he swam off under the cover of darkness.
I know there are deer along the river, I saw one walking down the sidewalk one late night when I was leaving work ( I work close to the river) a few years back. Yes....a deer walking down the sidewalk...not trotting, or bounding.....but walking.
I too am anxious for the weather to warm up a little more so that the kitties activate a little more. I have already spotted a few nice looking spots, that just may hold a few.

Just kidding, sounds like it could be possible though. Later J

Probably right. Although, I believe there is a snapping turtle native to Utah. I'll go look it up. We had big Western Snapping turtles in Eastern Colorado where I used to live, and an occasional soft shell, too.
But your reply was exactly why I asked, hoping to get some description. I've seen a fairly big soft shelled turtle basically leap off a bank like that, once.

Did the turtle look anything like either of these?
