]A lot of the different materials are used for numerous flies. ie: grizzly hackle is used on woolly buggers, griffiths gnat, wings for mosquitos. Other materials like peacock hurl is used on royal coachman, royal wulff, griffiths gnat, and many other types of flies. So if you want a general list try this:
thread size 6 and 8 black, brown, olive to start
grizzly hackle
black hackle
brown hackle
peacock hurl
Mrabou in different colors (brown, black, olive, white)
Chenille different colors and sizes available
hooks in different sizes (the ones you use the most of)
red floss
Calf tail or similar (used for royal wulffs)
wire
small beads
bunny fur (dubbing) or other type of similar material
head cement (a must)
dubbing wax
zap a gap or other CA type glue
crystal flash (comes in different colors, nice flash add on)
All these materials are used on multiple flies.
As you become more creative and profficient you will want to add to your materials. Also a great source for patterns and info is the magazine Fly Tyer. I have many issues that I refer back to time to time. Also some will have new flies that I want to tie up and then I get the materials that I don't have.
If you know someone that hunts ask for some of the feathers from their kill (ducks. geese, pheasant, turkey, etc...) a great source for different types of materials.
This will be a start for you. When I find materials on sale or clearance I will usually look through and pick up the stuff I most likely will use. Another great way to get materials at a great price. Did it at Sportsmans a few years back, got lots of different colors of thread and stuff.
