When my dad found out I was going to Powell, he decided to have our annual boys trip this week instead of over thanksgiving. Both times of the year offer different advantages. The bass fishing is what really sets the spring apart.

With six people not everyone can fish out of the boat, so I was float tube bound. I threw clouser minnows on a five weight and caught ten species of fish, including a small northern. The crappie were harder than some springs past but still plentiful.

The highlight of the trip was having stripers push shad into the bay I was fishing and start erupting all over. I didn't know they did that in may. The stripers were mostly singles or doubles not huge schools and very skinny. We caught lots of these same skiny stripers fishing for cats after dark. I threw on a top water plug on the spinning outfit and casted to shore. A three pound largie instantly engulfed it. The stripers were very difficult to catch on the top water. The clauser worked much better, but the bass, especially the big largies, were all over it. I never took the plug off the rest of the trip.

It was an amazing trip, highlighted by great fish dinners and time spent with my best friends.

great post! Powell is Mecca, and one of the few places you can keep every fish you catch without a tinge of guilt! Looks like some killer fish tacos for your family this week!

Well done sir

Fish tacos for sure. We let go about 90%. We kept everything we caught Friday morning and had a fillet party and had them on ice by 11 a.m. The rest of the time just our walleye catches provided enough for the meals up there.
