Hey, do you guys have any good ideas about how to decontaminate a fishing rod and reel that accidentally has been thrust into poison ivy? I have wiped it off with clorox disinfectant wipes but there still seem to be residue. I put it into my armpit and wow my entire underarm is red and itchy. I have it all over in sporadic places now. Already washed my other gear and clothes but can't wash the reel because it might ruin it. Any ideas? I heard it takes 5yrs for the poison to go away at best.

Don't know about the gear but for your body calamine lotion.

Can't wash a reel? I wash mine all the time. To clean the outside, try alcohol.

I would use the regular blue Dawn dish soap.

You want to get a soap called Fles Naptha, It's a bar soap and is sold in the laundry isle at most but not all stores. It's made to be a stain remover and it work wonders for that but it is used to remove the residue you speak of from poison ivy.

Just use it like a regular bar of soap and let us know how it works out.

I would also recommend dawn dish soap. My friend crashed my mountain bike into a poison ivy patch. When he brought it back, I gloved up and washed it with Dawn. I never got any irritation.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will most definitely try all of them! Getting new bumps every day and haven't been in contact with any new ivy so I know the car interior and gear are to blame and maybe even kitchen chairs....dunno about the sofa lol.

Can't get rid of the poison ivy? Just keeps getting worse and worse? Go to your doctor and get a cortizone shot. It will start clearing it up right away. P.S.......as much as you'd like to scratch that itch, don't. It will just break open the blisters and make them spread. But I guess you already are finding that out.
