I have always felt that the LL largemouth USUALLY spawn around the date of the May full moon. This morning I caught this nice 20" female that obviously decided that she preferred the dark of our recent new moon. I'd guess she went from a fat 4-5 pounder to a slim and trim 3-4 pounder overnight. I measure my fish, rather than weigh them, since her length stayed 20" through the whole process.

I also had an 18" fish which had not spawned that was caught about 1/4 mile from that 20" fish. These were two of 27 caught by 11:30, when I quit for lunch.

Nice one!! Glad to see you catching them. I've got to get off my lazy butt and get over there before the Feds close it down. The boat is finally licensed, so no excuse now. [Wink]

Apparently no one has really come up with a satisfactory answer as to why largemouth are frequently found with red lips, gums, or other parts in their mouth. As to the sex of the fish, if they've got a great big belly at this time of year they are most likely females. I also believe most of the large bass are females.

If it is guarding a bed and you can see it is probably a male. If it is shallow it is probably a male, if it is fat and came a bit deeper it's probably a staging female looking to come up. If it is long and skinnier than it should be it's probably a female that spawned out. If it pisses everywhere when you pull it in it is a male.
If you get a chance go sight fish at Havasu, you will see them pick up your bait and you will never feel a thing. I think there mouths are red because all the stuff they carry away from the bed. I do agree all the bass above 5 pounds are most likely females, if there is 2 on a bed 95% of the time the big one is the female.
