At least it wasn't an expensive fly rod. Ya been there done that at bear lake. Put 2 flies on and dang those sucker ran as far as i could see till there was no running to go on a 5 weight fly rod.

Yes, usually on the hookset. If you broke it while fighting the fish your drag was set too tight for your rod.
Ultra-lights are not for carp!

Here's one I broke!

Looks like you may have bruised the rod by hitting it on the gunnel of you boat. When you put pressure on the fish, the rod snapped at the location of the bruise. check with BPS about replacing it. Most manufacturers will replace a rod that breaks in the middle like that !!!
When a rod breaks on a fish that means it died well.

When I went to Brazil a couple months ago, I took a borrowed 8 weight G-Loomis. I caught 10 and 12 pound peacock bass on it. The next day, I broke it on a 3 pounder. I was just sick about it. Our group of nine guys broke 6 or 7 rods that trip. One of the guys took out two rods at once when he took a spill in the boat and landed on them.

Hey brookie I beg to disagree. Ultra lites are for everything you can catch on them. Yes I have broken one in the past....it was fighting a wiper at Willard. Not the fishes fault, not the rods fault, but the anglers fault.
Having said that I never leave home without my ultra lite. Last trip to UL it landed 1 8# carp, 3 3-4 # cats among other things that day.
Too much fun not to fish with an ultra. Not to mention giving the fish a fighting chance. Just one mans opinion. [:p]

I agree with you to an extent. But I release most fish anyway, so that's giving them a good chance. With trout, ultralights are like light flyrods. They create way too much stress on the fish by fighting them much longer than neccessary. When I'm trout fishing, I want to get the smaller fish in quick and hurry the next cast for a bigger one. Like you say though, to each their own. I've done the ultralight thing myself. Makes small fish alot funner. I just think they're hard on trout. For carp and other species, go for it.

Did u break it on that monster salmon [laugh]

No, I actually broke it on a lake trout at the Gorge using someone else's rod. Although my wife did snap a rod in half on a Salmon that was more than 20 pounds smaller than the one in my pick, all of which occured on the same day. I have a picture of that somewhere as well.

Just gonna throw in my two cents worth. NEVER EVER EVER whip a rod to try and free a hang up. Doing so is guaranteed to find the weakest spot on the rod and cause a failure. The rods today are so far superior to the ones of years past it's amazing but the wall thickness is less and they are more subject to damage from impact. If you let a rod hit any kind of edge with much force, expect it to fail at the least opportune moment the next time you hook a bigun.

With fly rods, same thing. Add clipping it at all with a fly and the worst breaker, when fighting a fish, putting your free hand up on the rod itself, to fight it. They are built for the whole rod to flex.
