I'm Confused with the hot an cold reports. I'm a tuber that wants to fish the N.E.area for bass and useses reapers and wacky hooked tiki sticks, slow fishes on the bottom. I don't know whether to go to the Weeb. and catch all I want or or try Mantua. I would much prefer bass but, --------.. well, am torn. [:/] Am I too early?

I've always done well in the NE corner this time of year, and through the next month. Mantua is one of those I go to expecting (not just hoping) to get onto some fish.

Hit some good gill beds just east-south of the beach area early last summer. Up along the west, off the reeds - seen gill beds. Just never really got into 'em along the north or south, but seen enough others trying...

What with the dock over on the NE - you should have an easy launch. Almost wish they'd cleared a few more shrubs, and laid some gravel - make an easier launch for toons, tubes, and canoes.

I was really gonna give it a try Monday, but after finding more suckers on the river, and being pretty sure I could get into more kitties, I couldn't resist.
Thing is the bass/gill bedding time is limited. And I've missed out other years, so very soon - I'll hit it. Be sure to let you know what I find.
Bass are still in the shallows but definitely spawned out now. Bluegills are not on beds yet but any day now. It's the end of May bass spawn is coming to a close statewide. There are a few stray straggler beds here and there but most of the lower elevation females have already bedded 2 to 3 times. At mantua they only seem to have energy to go once. However there's no shortage of fry in the shallows for sure lol. It's never too early for bass. Catch plenty there right through the ice till the last day you can stand on that ice at the end of March. And mantua bass are not intelligent, so go get em' Be sure to post up some more fork pics hahahaha. [Wink]

I was afraid of that. I've been out of town the past week, and busy the week before that, and the weather got warm so fast, I guess I missed it. Oh well, time to break out the bluegill imitations and piss off some bass [Smile]

Males are still guarding so you still have a chance, I saw a postspawn female cruising the other day still but they are not tied to the beds at all. Males kicked their asses off the beds long ago. It was a weird year. They bedded at the same time as lower elevation practically even though it's definitely colder up there. But usually the bluegills get it on while the males are still guarding but they didn't do that this year. A small section of blue beds were made two weeks ago when it was really hot, but no eggs were really laid, and the males abandoned the beds when a cold front hit and never re attempted again yet. Anytime now though.
