hey all, haven't posted in a while, in fact i believe its been over a year! but anyways i was wondering what you all think about oquirrh lake. i fished it just the other day and managed to catch some feisty bluegill and large mouth, the lake is full of them! they were all under 10 inches but i couldn't help to notice some larger bass cruising the shoreline that were seemingly uninterested in my offerings.
from what i understand the lake used to be stocked when it opened but after a parasitic worm was found the dwr decided to discontinue stocking and allow residents to fish it out. now the lake has just kinda been sitting there for nearly 4 years! there are some occasional fisherman every now and then but for the most part is is left alone. i optimistically believe that those bass will keep growing and growing, seeing as how they have remained relatively undisturbed since the last rainbow trout were caught back in 2009. what are your opinions? i know the bass specialists will have a few things to say.

Interesting... This morning I had a Dr. appointment at the U of U clinic and decided to check out the lake afterword. Pulled out the fly rod and started walking the shoreline. Lot's of gills/sunfish, some of them decent sized. I saw a bunch of LMB, but every single one I saw was 8 inches or less. I am sure there are some pigs in there, but I couldn't trick them into biting anything I was throwing. I caught the village idiot, and a bunch of gills/green sunfish.

nice! i really believe this man made lake has some amazing potential in future years, the biggest bass i was able to spot was probably about 15 inches, few more years and who knows, maybe it will become a great large-mouth fishery.

My biggest bass out of there was 13-14". Most of them are 8" or smaller and a few 10-11".
I've seen one guy pull a nice 16-18" bass out of there a few years ago.
I just wish it was legal too get in my float tube and head in the deep area to find them but that will never happen again.

I live in Daybreak and fish there all the time. I have pulled a couple 2 lbs LMB out of there. I saw a guy pull a 4lbs LMB out a couple weeks ago. All were released to fight another day. My personal best for total chatch was 9 bass in 2 hrs. Its a fun place to fish if you are looking to shore fish and or have kids to take with you.

wow that big? i definitely need to fish it more!

While you go after small fish I actually went after for decent size bass out of that lake. [

Wow looks like it has good potential and how big is this lake?

The lake has a total water area of 16 acres. I went fishing last night ( Fri) and caught 7 LMB all under 1 pound. Went this am and caught another 6 LMB, most were little dinks this am. The bigger ones were not hungry. I will try to get pics of my bigger ones up later.

Ya the bigger bass are really picky but I got a few tricks up my sleeve to bug them enough so they will take it sometimes. Especially with my fly rod [cool].

It's a decent play. You can only fish from shore

ly. I wish you can float tube out their but its illegal in that lake. I'm very disappointing in that rule for the lake.

Hey I was wondering how you caught them and where you fished I went but had no luck the gills just didn't want to commit. I didn't see any LMB either how did you do it?[/reply][/reply]

I have seen my brother catch 5+ lbs largemouth out there. I herd (and I don't believe everything I hear) that after the DWR stocked the lake Rio Tinto (kennacott) posted it as private property. And tried to close it to the public. Making it only accessible to daybreak residents only. The DWR wanted them to pay for the stocked fish (as they were funded by taxes and licenses). When they refused to pay they were forced to open it to the public that payed for the stocked fish. That whole dibockle led to the lack of future stocking. And it was a few years later the round worm scare happened. The lake was closed for a few months because of that. I don't know of the validity of the stocking story but I did get ran off the lake from some security gaurds during the round worm scare. I posted a bass I landed last summer. I catch em using poppers, spinners, jerkbaits, plastic worms and grubs typical bass technics.

The lake was actually closed for a few months because of the Round worm was infected in the lake during summer in 2009 but that worm died fast from the cold winter not because of found my DNR. I've been fishing that lake since it was open. In this link they said they only closed the beach but they actually closed the whole lake even put fences up around the whole lake when it happened. Sure is a nice get away place for a few hrs.

Strange reply kid! I stated the same fact about the round worm. What are you trying to say "that worm died fast from the cold winter not because of found my DNR". Half of that sentence didn't make any sense. I don't think ya got the gist of the story. That being why aren't the DNR stocking the lake. If you have been fishing the lake from day one you would know that it wasn't stocked in 08. The worm scare was 09. Are ya seeing the timeline here? I agree it can be a nice place to fish for a few hrs. I don't like the trash the wannabe anglers leave(as you can see fishing line in the background of troutbumdave's post). I have been harassed by daybreak residents "if you don't live at daybreak you shouldn't fish here. I pay for the care and maintenance of this lake" he said. There is some truth to this. But it's a public fishery and A holes are everywhere. All I can do is try to be a better person by picking up some extra trash and being as polite to others as need be(I don't mind calling bs or telling someone mind your manners)!

Sorry didn't see that you wrote about the round worms my pc is on high resolution and I didn't have my glasses on lol xD.
I fish there often during the spring and summer time so a lot of people notice me there by now [laugh] especially the boat resident rental guys know me as well and I always talk to the guys if they got any new info for bass. That's interesting that you have been harassed by locals. The only people who can kick you out are the lake patrol if you float tubing the reservoir from what my friend told me as well the regulation on the boards say. I just think it's funny that they will kick out people in a float tube but not people who grab there own paddle boards or kayak from there house.

I should clarify that I don't know that troutbumdave left the fishing line there. I just used the example. He probably just happen to get it in the frame incidentally. If it is his trash and he left it behind shame on him. Regardless I'm not trying to place blame on him. As for flyfishinglover's reply it's cool. Your a young excited angler. A word of advice organize your thoughts.

I also think that discarded line in TBD's pic is his fly line. So I bet he took it with him.
