Wanda and I fished the local crappie tournament today. It was her first tournament of any kind. She had a lot of fun. We almost won too. Missed by 0.1 on the win. Missed big fish by 0.15. Or close to that anyway.

We caught a ton of fish, but just couldn't get enough of the bigger fish to bite today. We needed to cull one fish with a 12" fish and we would have taken this tournament. Just couldn't get one to bite.

We fished Bobby Garland jigs in 1/16 oz sizes. Cajun Cricket, Outlaw Special, Ghastly Minnow, Electric Chicken, Screamer, and a Soddy Custom lure in the Blue Thunder color with a tail light. We had between 50 and 60 fish to bite today.

Highlight of the day was when Wanda hooked into a monster Catfish and fought it for about 10 minutes. It nearly spooled her a couple of times, but she was always able to coax it back toward the boat. We never did see the fish, but as it was straight down from the boat after a 10 minute fight, the barb on the hook finally gave way. The Mr Crappie 4 lb test line did not break, but the hook barb on the hook broke off and just left the bend of the hook along with the slab slayer that she had tied on. She was disappointed, but during the fight she was complaining about her arms being tired and wanting me to take the rod. Of course, I wouldn't do that. She got it hooked up, she has to fight it in. That's just how we roll. emoBig

She also caught a little smallmouth bass that she had fun with. I probably should have weighed all our fish instead of just guessing if I got the biggest ones out or not. We had a limit of keepers in the boat which made it back to Tyner Lane. They are on ice as I type and will be in the freezer before it gets dark tonight.

5 boats in the tournament and congratulations to Catfish1 and Hippy on their 2nd consecutive win. It is now time to break up the monopoly. emoBig emoGeezer We enjoyed meeting and fellowshipping with everyone this AM and after the weigh in. See you guys next month. emoFish
